Thank you for 4 of the best years of my life
July 25th 2009
As I prepare to head down the Coquilhalla Highway to start the next chapter of my life back in my hometown of Vancouver, I wanted to thank you for the best 4 years of my life.
Friday's broadcast was truly one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had- having so many of you coming by...it was incredibly touching. I've received hundreds of amazing e-mails and facebook messages and wanted to let you know how much it's truly appreciated- thank you. YOU made this show a success and I feel so honored that you welcomed me into your lives with open arms for 4 amazing years.
Next time you're in Vancouver, check out our sister station, Virgin Radio 9 5 3, where you'll find a familiar friendly voice that'll remind you of home :-)
Please keep in touch on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kevinlimradio or e-mail Klim@radio.astral.com
As I mentioned during my final break on SUN FM, I hope you'll continue to support SUN FM, and I hope you'll show the new host, Ara, just as much love as you've shown me over the past 4 years.
...but no more than that.
haha j/k ;-)
Keep doing good things to help others, never be afraid to laugh at yourself, and always remember that you can touch someone's life...even if never meet them in person.

Ogopogo DEAD?! Say it ain't so!!
1985 File Photo courtesy of the Province Newspaper
You know it's tourist season in the Okanagan when...
Yes there's another Ogopogo sighting...only this time, he (or is it she?) is supposedly dead(!)
Kelowna resident Dan Poppoff says he found a 1.2 metre-long carcass, believed to have belonged to our beloved Ogopogo. It's been speculated that it might be the tail of Ogopogo...leaving the possibility that our lake monster could be DEAD (or perhaps aimlessly swimming around in circles without its tail).
Dan says he spotted the carcass while kayaking on Okanagan Lake last month. Wait...LAST MONTH? Why do we always hear about these stories so far after the fact?
According to the Province newspaper, not only does Dan have a photo, he actually HAS the carcass stored in a freezer, after he was advised by an Ogopogo expert to have it analyzed by scientists. The expert says: "This is something very important to the scientific community. What we're looking at is an unidentified species and this might open the door to this mystery".
Apparently there have been about 1000 Ogopogo sightings in the past 30 years and every year there's at least 5 people who say they've seen the lake monster. This would be the 3rd of 2009.
While we await the DNA tests on the lake-monster-in-an-icebox...I can't help but remember last year when someone claimed that they found sasquatch's body and had him in a freezer, only for us to later find that it was just a gorilla costume.
Could Ogopogo really be dead? Or could this be the carcass of some other massive creature living in the lake? I say...let's drain the lake! That way we'll know for sure. If we drain the lake and find nothing, we know it was never there. BUT if we drain it and find Ogopogo, MYSTERY SOLVED!
...except we just killed it by draining the lake.
Hmm...perhaps for now I'll just post a picture of my recent Ogopogo sighting on my way to our SUN FM studios on Bernard:

Michael Jackson provided the soundtrack to my life...
Programming Note: SUN FM will celebrate the music of the late Michael Jackson on a special edition of the the Lost 80’s and 90’s Brunch (9am-noon Sunday June 28th)
1:15am:
I’ve often wondered what it would be like to have to be broadcasting when news breaks that rocks the world. Today I experienced it.
Michael Jackson- the King of Pop- died today.
Never did I ever imagine I’d have to ever type those words, let alone tell you that on-air. Today was a surreal experience and although the majority of my show was filled with your reactions and thoughts about the news…it’s only now sinking in for me. Us radio folk are often so busy trying to bring you the news when something like this happens that we often don’t have a free moment to reflect on it ourselves.
I can’t believe he’s gone. I feel like I lost part of my childhood today, as his music was the soundtrack to my life growing up. My mom called me tonight to talk about it because she knows that I’ve always been a huge fan of Michael Jackson the entertainer. When I was younger, I watched my MJ “Moonwalker” VHS so many times, I wore out the tape. When my dad bought me Michael Jackson’s “BAD” cassette, it was always in my walkman.
Fast-forward to Grade 8. MJ’s “You Are Not Alone” was song that was playing when I first noticed the girl who would later become my wife.
In Grade 11, I sang and performed as Michael Jackson in the school talent show- complete with a white-sequinned glove, an open royal blue dress shirt that parachuted when I would turn, and black dress shoes with white socks that you could see when I moonwalked across the stage.
Then, just last year I lived out a dream I’ve had since I was a child of learning the entire Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance routine. With my friend Bri Cook and the amazing crew at Aradia Fitness, we danced our way into the world record books with “Thrill the World- Kelowna”. It was the largest simultaneous dance of “Thriller” around the world, and we had the biggest turnout in the country. On top of that, we raised over $6500 to help sick kids at KGH through our SUN FM Have a Heart Radiothon.
Suffice it to say, Michael Jackson the performer and singer has played a prominent role in my life, and I do feel a loss today. I not only look at all the memories I have of the King of Pop, I am selfishly sad at the fact we will never get to hear a new song from him again aside from what’s already been recorded. I mentioned on-air that I was hoping to see him if his comeback tour (set to begin in mere days) was brought to North America. He was such a brilliant performer and his songs shaped pop music as we know it today. Usher, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo, and countless other SUN FM artists all name Michael Jackson as one of their major influences.
I didn’t want to believe it when it was first reported. I hoped that it was just another one of those bad rumours on the internet. This time it was real. I received more phone calls, e-mails, facebook messages, tweets and texts than I’ve ever had in my radio career. Say what you will about the man’s personal life…it seems everyone agrees that we lost a musical genius today- a man who made an indelible imprint on our generation and pop culture history.
What are your Michael Jackson memories?
Long Live the King of Pop.

A dream come true..."Thrill the World- Kelowna"
Megan Fox...will you accept MY rose?
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well last week this photo made its way around the world:
ouch.
Poor poor kid...you can actually hear his dreams shatter.
I know exactly what that kid must've felt like in this photo. When I was 5 years old, I had a huge crush on "Alice" from Alice in Wonderland. So imagine my excitement when I went to Disneyland for the first time and saw her in person! I rushed up to take a photo with her, but then that stupid Mad Hatter yelled "OH! It's tea time!" and their entourage proceeded to run away. So in a photo album somewhere, there's a picture of me looking much like that kid in the Megan Fox photo...running after Alice, trying desperately to get her attention to no avail.
But I digress.
Back to Megan Fox. How could the newly-single Transformers hottie have been so heartless? Truth is...she didn't even see the him. So she's formally apologized to him and has given him an open invite to accept his rose.
Sure, it's not a date, a kiss, or anything remotely close to the fantasy life they'd live together in his head, but it's something! So the search is on to find that kid ASAP! Imagine if he got a chance to take her up on her offer? It'd make his
Good luck, brother!

Where you can get a "Screamer" in Kelowna!
Heyo!
With summer on the horizon, there's a Kelowna-favorite summertime treat that people go CRAZY over- the "Screamer".
I confess...despite living here for almost 4 years, up until this week I'd never even heard of one! Apparently I've been living under a rock! As soon as I admitted it on my show, immediately I got bombarded by e-mails, texts, calls, and facebook messages from listeners who couldn't believe I had never experienced the treat, which is a mix of a slurpee/slushee/slush and soft-serve ice cream. Some places call them "Yaks", or "Slammers".
I figured I'd never heard of it because I'm allergic to milk, but then during my show, Brent from Knox Mountain Market on Ellis dropped by our studios with one for me- they serve non-dairy Screamers! I tried it on-air, and I immediately understood what all the fuss was about- they're so good!!
Here's an example of how passionate people are about their "Screamers":
Janelle Rhode wrote:
You have never had a screamer????????? WHO ARE YOU!!! You havent lived until you have had a crush flavored screamer while stuck in traffic with no air conditioning...ahh...how i love summer...
Shannon White wrote:
Hey Kevin, The best screamer ever is at Woodsdale store on the Bottom of Wood Lake road in Winfield. I grew up in Winfield and the highlight of my summers where riding my bike to the store to get a scream... the best is Crush Lime with lots of white soft ice cream!!! MMMM...
Katie Balkwill wrote:
Welcome to the world of screamers Kevin!
I'm new in Kelowna and have had a great deal of discussion with my roommate as to where you can get a screamer in Kelowna (I am also trying to convert her to the land of screamers).~ I've heard rumors of a place in Rutland, but hoping there is somewhere close to the beaches you can get one.~ HELP!
Cheers!
So here's a quick list of the places where you can get a Screamer in Kelowna!
Canadian Tire Gas Bar on Hwy 97 and Leckie
Mohawk on Hwy 97 in Westbank
Woodsdale corner store in Windfield
Husky across from Pizza Hut on 97 in Kelowna
Bankhead Store on Bernard Ave in Kelowna
Knox Mountain Market on Ellis (they serve non-dairy Screamers!)
Anywhere else you can get one? Leave a comment!
As always, thanks for listening, and here's to a great summer filled with hot days and cool Screamers!

Today I become…a Ghostbuster.
...Who Ya Gonna Call?...
Today my childhood dream comes true, and I will become…a Ghostbuster. Allow me to “geek-out” for a few moments…
If you’re a loyal listener (especially of the SUN FM Lost 80’s and 90’s Brunch, Sundays 9-noon), you know that I’m a HUGE Ghostbusters fan. Growing up in the 80’s…Egon, Ray, Winston, and Peter were my “Superman”, my “Batman”…they were my childhood heroes. I had the action figures, watched the cartoon, and was even published in one of the issues of the official Ghostbusters comic book when my mom sent in a photo of me when I was 7 and dressed up in full GB gear (I wish I had thought to scan it while at my parents’ house last week in Vancouver to show you).
But it’s not like I ever outgrew the dream of wanting to become a Ghostbuster. If you’ve added me on facebook, you’ll notice that Ghostbusters 1 and 2 are still listed as my top 2 favorite movies. In fact here in my office at home, I’m looking at an authentic film cel that Katie got me for one of my birthdays. I love it so much.
While I may be one extreme example of a fan, it’s undeniable that Ghostbusters has made an indelible imprint on our pop culture history. Last summer at Universal Studios I hit the jackpot when I found a t-shirt with a glow-in-the-dark GB logo on it, and whenever I wear it at the station or around Kelowna someone stops me to ask where I got it.
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the original movie, today Sony has released the original film on Blu-Ray…and the long-awaited “Ghostbusters: The Video Game”!!! All of the original cast members lent their voices to the game and the storyline picks up 2 years after Ghostbusters 2 ended…it practically serves as a “Ghostbusters 3”. Here’s Dan Ackroyd (aka: Ray Stanz) chatting up the game’s premise and news on the NEW Ghostbusters movie in development (I’m in heaven haha):
I kid you not when I say I’ve been waiting for this day for a looong time. Not only has it been 20 years since the last Ghostbusters movie, but this video game was originally supposed to come out last year. Suffice it to say, once my show’s done today I’m rushing home to live out my dream of becoming a Ghostbuster :-)
And now to "exorcise" the song that's been running through your head while reading this blog:
As always, thanks for listening (and allowing me to geek-out)!

Canada's New Triangular 50-cent coin! (pic inside)
QUICK! Check the change in your pocket! Did you know that there’s a TRIANGULAR 50 cent coin now out here in Canada? I kid you not!
How cool! The Royal Canadian Mint just released this “guitar-pick” shaped coin as a tribute to the Six String Nation Guitar, which contains 64 pieces of Canadian treasures, like a piece of Bluenose II's deck, and gold from Maurice Richard's Stanley Cup ring.
Want more? Well, my friend…sit back and enjoy this 2:44 minute educational video:
There’s only 30,000 of these in circulation, so happy hunting! If you find one…I’ll give you a toonie for it! Think about the return investment! Let me know if you find one you’re willing to part with because I want one! ;-)

Video: Eminem Freaks Out @ MTV Movie Awards + Twilight: New Moon- Trailer!
Last night's MTV Move Awards could've been called the Twilight Awards as the movie swept the night. So, will the second movie- filmed mostly here in BC- be just as successful? If you missed it last night, here's your first look at "New Moon" (despite the fact that I don't "get" this whole fascination with Robert Pattinson lol):
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON trailer in HD
Despite Twilight's 5 wins (including Best Movie), THIS is the clip everyone's talking about today...watch Eminem's freak out when a bare-bottomed Sacha Baron Cohen - in character as the gay Austrian fashion reporter Bruno - "fell" from a suspended wire into the face of Eminem:
**WARNING: Not for all ages**
What do you think? Real or staged? It didn't look like Eminem was in on the joke at all...then again...he DID win an Oscar a few years ago...
...ok it was for Best Original Song, but still...

Simon Cowell has a heart after all...(video)
The first part of this video is heart-breaking, but Simon Cowell proves that despite what we've come to expect from him on American Idol, he does have a heart. Watch as he sticks up for a talented 10 year old girl who sadly forgot the words during her semi-final performance on Britan's Got Talent (aka: the show that made Susan Boyle a household name):
Later in the show, the judges decided to advance her to the finals. While some people online are saying they shouldn't have given her a second chance, Simon did the right thing by at least giving her another chance. If anything, he saved himself (as the creator of the show) from the inevitable mobs of angry people who would've blasted them for not having any compassion for the poor girl. Good on ya, Simon!
