Aging Population Good for Some Businesses
An aging population can mean good news for some businesses in the Central Okanagan.
New statistics show that by July of next year, the number of seniors living in Kelowna will exceed the number of people under the age of 18.
Economic Development Officer Corie Griffiths says that creates a special niche of businesses, that caters to the aging population.
Griffiths says businesses that benefit from an aging population include transportation, health and wellness and even technology providers.
Griffiths says the stats also aren't that surpising, since the increase has been extremely gradual.
Also, Griffiths says the stats aren't surprising. She notes the percentage of seniors has only jumped 2 percent, from 17 percent in 1996 to 19 percent in 2006.
