Three car crash on Highway 97

A major crash near Kelowna International Airport has shut down Highway 97.

RCMP Constable Clover Johns says three cars were involved in the collision when it happened around 11:30am.

"The northbound vehicle swerved in his lane and then possibly over-corrected before striking the barrier and flipping over the barrier into two other vehicles."

A powerpole was snapped at the scene.  Johns says, "What happened is when he struck the two other vehicles, one vehicle, the truck, kept going and he struck the powerpole."

All three drivers have been taken to hospital - paramedics say they are not seriously hurt.

Investigators remain on the scene.  The Highway could be closed for the rest of the day.

Meanwhile, Fortis BC is making some headway in restoring power in the area.  Spokesperson Jodi Foster-Sexsmith says the crash left about 1500 customers in the dark:

"Since the motor vehicle accident earlier this morning at the corner of Edwards and Highway 97, we have been able to restore about half of our customers that were off."

As for everyone else without power, Foster-Sexsmith says they hope to get the lights back on by around 3:30pm.  She tells us, "Those are the customers in the areas of Penno Road, Norris, Edwards, Aclan, Adams, and a small stretch of Highway 97."
