For anyone who lived through the patchouli-and-pot-scented love-in of youthful irresponsibility that was the '60s, hearing Ravi Shankar's droning, shimmering sitar brings it all back. Bell-bottoms, peace signs, the Fillmores, cadres of acquisitive Indian spiritual guides (one was dubbed Maharishi Two-Car-Garaji), George Harrison's psychedelic experiments, and clashing tie-dye that could induce petit mal in a non-epileptic -- it was a brave new world. This compilation is obviously being marketed more toward nostalgic boomers than serious aficionados of Indian classical music; the cover art is an acid flash in microcosm. Read More
