With their seemingly effortless two-part harmonies, Jamaica's Maytones (Vern Buckley and Gladstone "Son" Grant) were one of the best (if not the most unsung) reggae roots acts of the 1970s. Working with the sparse, simple rural rhythms provided by producer Alvin Ranglin, and blessed with Buckley's clear and subtle songwriting, the duo turned out track after track of quality material. This collection misses a couple of the bigger hits like 1976's "Madness" and the magnificent "Bongo Man Rise," but includes plenty of charming cuts like "Funny Man," the heartfelt "Africa We Want to Go," and the gorgeous "Boat to Zion," to make it well worth investigating.
