Ogopogo Sighting

Local News

She couldn't believe her eyes.

Robyn Holman of Kelowna and her friend were traveling along Highway 97 near Peachland Sunday afternoon when she noticed something in the water below...something she believes was Ogopogo:

Holman says she saw a wave in the water with no boats around it and something bobbing amongst the waves. Holman says she took a picture of it with her camera, and is now waiting to get the photo developed.

Whether it turns out or not, Holman is convinced that Ogopogo does infact exist.

O.K people....are you serious?? That wasn't the ogopogo that Mrs.Holman saw, it was A WAVE!!!A BOAT WAVE!!! The kind of waves as she describes she saw occur all of the time on Okanagan lake, and yes a boat wave can carry for miles, and perhaps to some who want so badly to beleive, it may appear to look like the ogopogo, sure it's fun to imagine, to seek out, but c'mon, are you serious??? For anyone who's ever spent time on or near the lake, they know exactly what i am talking about. I can guarantee you that i could show you a thousand pictures that look quite similar to the one that Mrs.Holman is awaiting...But taking pictures of boat waves doesn't excite me.

I believe it, I have done the research on it, I can't wait to see those pictures. But hopefully no one goes and tries to capture it, I think human has done enough to the poor animals and creatures out there. Lets leave this one alone.

A lot of people always say "Ogopogo doesn't exist, it's a giant sturgeon!" However...if you do some research...there are no confirmed reports, EVER, of sturgeon in Okaganan Lake. So, if there's no sturgeon in the lake...what the heck is it people keep seeing year after year?!

"The coelacanth was thought to be extinct for 70 million years until it was discovered alive and well in 1938. The fish is no longer on the extinct list. If this fish could survive all those years undetected, why can't other prehistoric giants have done the same thing. Every year unknown animals or animals that were thought extinct are discovered." - - - i definetly think there is a big serpent down there. it's amazing. it'd be awesome to see what the underwater creatures look like. get a waterproofed camera! haha

I agree that it's probably a really big sturgeon or snake. The deeper the water the bigger the fish and as parts of the Okanagan Lake are so deep they can't be measured there are probably some pretty big fish down there. As for the picture I'm pretty surprised it hasn't cropped up yet. You'd think if there was a true sighting, with a photo no less, it'd already be developed and on the net. Maybe it didn't turn out like they hoped?

My eight year old son is really interested in seeing the picture of the ogopogo. He has been telling me about the ogopopo since he was six. He tell me that it even exists in the future. My husband came face to face with the ogopogo when he was a teenager. He was near rattlesnake island b-boarding and fell off. As he was under water, he opened his eyes and saw these two massive yellow eyes staring at him. Needless to say he didn't have a camera, but even if he did, he was so scared that he wouldn't have had time to take a picture in the midst of his scrambling out of the water. I would like to say though, that he was never hurt and didn't feel threatened. (Just shocked and freaked out. LOL)

it is true!!!!!

I was living in Summerland last year , On Aug 21/2007 Me and my husband were driving to the beach around 6.30 pm about 2 km from summerland going in the direction of Penticton We saw something in the water, there was no doubt about that, we pulled our van over to the side of the road and watched it for 5 min or more till it became to hard to see, I still have my original e mail I sent with description of sighting. I did not have my camera or binoculars to record it and I would love to see Robyn's picture.I am betting it will be identical to what we saw I contacted jkirk@bcscc.ca and told him of my sighting. I want to see that picture !!!!!!

I believe that there is an ogopogo but I don't think it's some magical creature just a really big snake/sturgeon type fish. It doesn't surprise me it's in our lake cause there are a lot of scary things swimming around in there....or sunk at the bottom.

I find it hard to believe that so many people actually believe in the ogopogo. I'm not one to argue the belief that just because you can't see something doesn't mean it's not there, but I have a hard time with this one. To me, Ogopogo is right up there with Santa Clause...a nice fairytale we tell our kids but once they reach a certain age they realize it is fiction. If someone has real pictures to prove the theory I'd be more than happy to see them. But I'm talking about more than a dark picture of water with some ripples and a 'dark object' sticking out (afterall, that is more likely a log, than a giant creature!).

i have a friend that is a professional diver. she told me about a time when she was quite deep in the water and suddenly, it seemed that it became even darker. when she turned her head, she saw "something" very large! when they tried to follow or pursue it, it was gone very quickly. she has told me that in the okanagan lake, there are fish bigger than cars when you get deeper. so, what makes people think that there's not something else down there? just a thought...

I hope you did see it!! Thats so interesting and special to have. Lots of people don't believe but even though you don't believe doesn't give you the right to go around putting everyone's beliefs down. Let people imagine and wonder about things. Its magical, like loch Ness and bigfoot. I honestly do believe in it even though I have never seen it, but if it is true, then leave it alone. I mean the creature has obviously lived for a long time and has never hurt anyone that we know of. SO, when this is proven get ready for the scientists and such to swarm the lake, at that time its ALL OF OUR responsibility to protect this creature, to keep the magic and fun alive!!!

When I was about 6 years old, I went on my first ferry ride on the lake. When I looked at the back of the Fintry Queen (the boat I was on) I saw strange waves, beyond the normal ones that are from the boat/wind ext. I always thought that it was the Ogopogo. But I was just a kid, but I'll always wonder. Cant wait to see those pictures.

I do to believe it is true, i have not seen ogopogo myself but if anyone has seen a strange figure in the water with no boats around im sure they would not lie. i do hope that there is an ogopogo out there! But a few years ago there was another ogopogo sighting and hunters came down and they were diving for it! it would be great if we could find out what it is, how it got there and if it looks anything like the picture we have today. but that is no reason to go out and catch this creature, it has done nothing to harm anybody or anything. This living creature belongs in the water safe like it has been for thousands of years!

Can I ask where along the trail you made your sighting? And when? If you live in the area, I'd like to interview you if you don't mind. I represent the BCSCC and I collect sightings in my spare time. Regards, Haley Fisher

it's true, it does exist. i saw it from up where the old trans canada trail use to be.(just out of penticton) unfortunetly by the time i got my camera out it was jus going back underwater. so we only got a picture of the water rippling.
