Headway in the Kelowna debit fraud investigation
Looks like someone has been tampering with the debit machine at the Westside "Staples" store.
Kelowna RCMP Constable Julie Rattee says, "What it appears to be is there's been tampering with the debit card pad."
The machine pinpad has been named as the source of the leaked information that's led to the recent string of debit card frauds being investigated.
Rattee says they don't think anyone with Staples is responsible. She says, "As I understand it, it doesn't appear to be an internal matter." Rather, she says it's probably a group of mobile fraudsters that are doing it.
She tells us they're now working with reps at the Staples store, as well as the banks, in their ongoing investigaion.
Meanwhile, businesses are advised to make it hard for people to tamper with their pin pads without people noticing. She advises that businesses keep the pin pad devices in a safe place, permanently mount them, or mark them.
