Set up your tree in a tree stand.
Now, get out all your Christmas lights. Join the strings together and test the lights. Replace any dead or dying bulbs and make sure the cord isn't damaged.
Unplug the cord.
Climb on a chair or stepladder, if necessary, and attach the socket end of the cord to the top of the tree.
Walk around the tree, barely tucking the cord into the branches in a gradually lowering spiral.
It's getting chilly... so we tracked down a list of tips to keep the fires burning and the pipes humming, just as they should, all winter long. Not only will these tips conserve energy, but they'll also save you money in the process.
Seal the deal: The easiest way to keep the heat inside your home is to seal air leaks. For unused or older windows, seal them using a plastic window-sealer kit, available from most hardware stores for about $20.
Get ready to heat: Furnaces should be checked every year, to make sure it's working as efficiently as possible.
Remember this order of operations: shirts on the bottom, then dresses, then pants.
Stack tops, unfolded, by placing wrinkle-prone tops toward the bottom of a pile and less easily wrinkled ones toward the top.
Fold the sleeves in toward the shirts' torsos. Fold the shirts in half from the bottom. You now have a rectangular bundle of shirts; place it in your suitcase.
Drape long dresses in the suitcase so that the ends hang over the sides. Place pants and skirts on a flat surface; fold each in half lengthwise.

Place all your cleaners and soaps on the belt first. That gets them down the line and out of the way so their fragrance won't get on to the rest of your groceries.
Step 2
Put all your canned foods on the belt, and then follow with boxed and packaged foods. This puts all the solids and heavy items at the end of the packing belt so they'll get packed first.
Step 3
Next, put your bags of milk and other dairy products on. They are usually in harder containers and so can take the brunt of other groceries pushing on them. Place your eggs on top of your bag of milk so it is easily noticed because that is the one item you don't want squashed.

Today's Things You Need To Know could be a life saver!
The most common gadgets in your home can be lifesavers in case of an emergency. Here, from the Red Cross, are seven things you'll need when a crisis strikes:
Paper Bag -- Inhaling and exhaling 10 times while holding it over your nose and mouth can stop a panic attack.
Juice Glass -- To easily remove an insect from someone's ear, pour a glass full of warm water into it. The bug should float to the surface.
Milk -- If you knock out a tooth, put it in a container of milk until you can get to your dentist. The milk is a neutral solution that will keep the tooth from drying out, increasing the odds that it can be reinserted.

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen. the shelter was clean, and the people really friendly.
I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.
But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to.
And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like "Lab people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.
We came across this advice from switched.com, how to make your cell phone battery last longer.
Turn your cell phone off. Sure, it might seem obvious, but when was the last time you actually shut off your phone when not using it? Well, do it next time, and you'll see just how much longer your battery lasts.
Avoid playing games, watching video or scrolling through pictures. If you know it could be a while before your next charge, then you might have to skimp on entertainment.
Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Wireless features such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may let you get your e-mail faster and free you of cords, but they're also slurping down lots of juice while they're on.
Unexpected guests? Here are the 5 dead giveaways of a dirty house. Fool even your mother-in-law by taking care of these things
Piles of mail - Hide them in an attractive basket with a lid, or keep one kitchen drawer empty for last-minute stashing.
Dust bunnies and cobwebs - Look high and low in the corners of the room where you'll be entertaining. Pull down cobwebs with a broom and pick up dust bunnies with a handheld vac.
A messy bathroom - Toss one of those blue drop-in cleaners into the toilet tank and no one will know that your bowl's not pristine. Quickly wipe down the sink and toilet seat and swipe the mirror with glass cleaner.

Found this on Yahoo over the weekend! The 7 deadly beauty sins!
SIN 1: THE MASK -- "The idea is to even out your skin tone. Foundation should be the same colour as your skin, not darker. If it's darker, you'll get a mask line."
SIN 2: CRUSTY CONCEALER -- "Go easy with concealer. Pat it on with your finger or a small, flat brush. If you don't, by the time you add foundation and powder, you end up with crustaceans."
SIN 3: DIVA LINER -- "The worst sin is dark lipliner worn with a lighter shade of lipstick. It just looks ghastly, like a bad tattoo. Or worse, like an exotic dancer."

The Breakfast Club tracked down some expert advice from Marie Clair on how to look your best while still enjoying all the treats the holidays have to offer!
Wear suits rather than dresses. The more lines and seams you have, the less attention is drawn to your not-so-perfect areas.
Choose dresses with high empire waists as they are more forgiving to trouble spots like the hips and waist.
Wear skinny diagonal stripes. The skinnier the stripe, the thinner you will appear.
Look for knits with a small textured pattern. Tiny designs are the best camouflage.

Twinkling Christmas LED lights like the ones that hang from the ceiling of Orchard Park Mall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Leave a comment if you think you can help :)
From today's "Things You Need To Know:" It's Holiday party season - and it can be VERY stressful if you aren't the chatty type. For you The Breakfast Club has "rules for conversation" at parties!
After introducing yourself to the host, scan the room and zero in on the most animated group of 3-to-5 people.
Reintroduce yourself to those who may have forgotten you but not by saying, "Remember me?"
Don't remain in one place. Mingle.
Don't try too hard to impress others by talking too much.
Don't discuss taboo topics such as politics, religion, illnesses, or personal problems.
Don't argue over minor details ... even if you're certain you're right.
Whatever you do, don't abruptly end a conversation with a negative comment or a moment of silence.
If you have any suggestions feel free to leave a comment!

From "Things You Need To Know"
Scientific research proves that we forget half of what we hear after 30 minutes. But five simple tricks will permit you to remember everything you hear forever:
1. Repeating what you hear as soon as you hear it will move the information from short-term memory into long-term memory. For example, if you're introduced to a stranger, figure out a way to mention her name in the ensuing conversation.
2. The human brain can store no more than seven bits of information at a time. If someone tells you something, chunk the information into small pieces and repeat them to yourself several times.
3. Write information down - even if you don't have pen and paper. Just tracing the words in the air with your finger will etch them in your memory.
4. Listen. When we're in a conversation, a lot of our attention is focused on what we're going to say next and not on what's coming out of the other person's mouth. Pay close attention.
5. Make mental "photographs" with the information written on them. (Nail it on a tree)
Do you have any memory tricks? Leave a comment and let us know!

The Breakfast Club wants you to have a safe and fun Halloween.. so here is a list of ways to stay safe while trick or treating tonight!
For Kids:
Carry a flashlight and Walk, don't run.
Don't cut across yards or driveway and wear a watch you can read in the dark.
Approach only houses that are lit. And stay away from and don't pet animals you don't know.
For Mom and Dad:
Make your child eat dinner before setting out.
You should know where they're going.
And although tampering is rare, tell children to bring the candy home to be inspected before consuming anything.
For homeowners:
Remember pets get frightened on Halloween. Put them up to protect them from cars or inadvertently bitting a trick-or-treater.
and fun non - food treats to consider: plastic rings, pencils, stickers, erasers, coins.
Happy Halloween!

Today on "Things you Need to Know" we talked banks!
Here are some fun facts you might not know about banking...
Banks hire 'mystery customers' who secretly test whether a teller is cross-selling services.
Postdating a cheque often doesn't work. With stacks of deposits to process, account names, not dates are what's most scrutinized. Then if the cheque bounces, you're liable.
You should keep receipts for every ATM transaction. And please don't feed cash directly into the machine without first putting it into an envelope (yes, people actually do this).
Banks often waive monthly fees if you keep a higher balance in your chequing account. That way, it's not in a savings account earning interest ... and costing the bank.
A bank has the right to pay itself back out of your next deposit for any fees or overdrafts you owe.
You should call or visit in person to resolve a banking problem. Filling out online forms will usually get you a 'by-the-book' reply.
And as promised here is the link for some fun money facts including how many folds the average bill is meant to take before it rips!

Sony says the recall involves 19 models in the Vaio T-Z series made between May 2007 and July 2008. Unlike Google, which looks at links and audience traffic, Cuil analyses the context of each page and the user's search request in much more detail. Check it out HERE.

20/20 hind sight is a wonderful thing... for future reference here is some wind storm safety information!
While high winds are commonly associated with severe thunderstorms, hurricanes and or disasters, they may also occur as a result of differences in air pressures, such as when a cold front passes across the area. High winds can cause downed trees and power lines, flying debris and building collapses, which may lead to power outages, transportation disruptions, damage to buildings and vehicles, and injury or death.
Preparing for High Winds In advance of any storm, be sure your property is secure. Remove any dead trees or overhanging branches near structures, loose roofing materials and objects in yards, patios, roofs or balconies that could blow away.

First, I'm going to tell you a little about me and my family. My name is Jeff. I am a Police Officer for a city which is known nationwide for its crime rate. We have a lot of gangs and drugs. At one point we were #2 in the nation in homicides per capita. I also have a police K-9 named Thor. He was certified in drugs and general duty. He retired at 3 years old because he was shot in the line of duty. He lives with us now and I still train with him because he likes it. I always liked the fact that there was no way to bring drugs into my house. Thor wouldn't allow it. He would tell on you. The reason I say this is so you understand that I know about drugs. I have taught in schools about drugs. My wife asks all our kids at least once a week if they used any drugs. Makes them promise they won't.

A strange little berry from west Africa that’s been tagged ‘The Miracle Fruit’ temporarily changes how the taste buds work, making beer taste like chocolate, lemons taste like candy and brussels sprouts taste like fruit. Restaurants in Japan have been serving it alongside unappetizing lo-cal desserts to help customers perceive they’re eating a decadent treat.
