The Kevin Lim Show - blog
Thank you for 4 of the best years of my life
July 25th 2009
As I prepare to head down the Coquilhalla Highway to start the next chapter of my life back in my hometown of Vancouver, I wanted to thank you for the best 4 years of my life.
Friday's broadcast was truly one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had- having so many of you coming by...it was incredibly touching. I've received hundreds of amazing e-mails and facebook messages and wanted to let you know how much it's truly appreciated- thank you. YOU made this show a success and I feel so honored that you welcomed me into your lives with open arms for 4 amazing years.
Next time you're in Vancouver, check out our sister station, Virgin Radio 9 5 3, where you'll find a familiar friendly voice that'll remind you of home :-)
Please keep in touch on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kevinlimradio or e-mail Klim@radio.astral.com
As I mentioned during my final break on SUN FM, I hope you'll continue to support SUN FM, and I hope you'll show the new host, Ara, just as much love as you've shown me over the past 4 years.
...but no more than that.
haha j/k ;-)
Keep doing good things to help others, never be afraid to laugh at yourself, and always remember that you can touch someone's life...even if never meet them in person.

Ogopogo DEAD?! Say it ain't so!!
1985 File Photo courtesy of the Province Newspaper
You know it's tourist season in the Okanagan when...
Yes there's another Ogopogo sighting...only this time, he (or is it she?) is supposedly dead(!)
Kelowna resident Dan Poppoff says he found a 1.2 metre-long carcass, believed to have belonged to our beloved Ogopogo. It's been speculated that it might be the tail of Ogopogo...leaving the possibility that our lake monster could be DEAD (or perhaps aimlessly swimming around in circles without its tail).
Dan says he spotted the carcass while kayaking on Okanagan Lake last month. Wait...LAST MONTH? Why do we always hear about these stories so far after the fact?
According to the Province newspaper, not only does Dan have a photo, he actually HAS the carcass stored in a freezer, after he was advised by an Ogopogo expert to have it analyzed by scientists. The expert says: "This is something very important to the scientific community. What we're looking at is an unidentified species and this might open the door to this mystery".
Apparently there have been about 1000 Ogopogo sightings in the past 30 years and every year there's at least 5 people who say they've seen the lake monster. This would be the 3rd of 2009.
While we await the DNA tests on the lake-monster-in-an-icebox...I can't help but remember last year when someone claimed that they found sasquatch's body and had him in a freezer, only for us to later find that it was just a gorilla costume.
Could Ogopogo really be dead? Or could this be the carcass of some other massive creature living in the lake? I say...let's drain the lake! That way we'll know for sure. If we drain the lake and find nothing, we know it was never there. BUT if we drain it and find Ogopogo, MYSTERY SOLVED!
...except we just killed it by draining the lake.
Hmm...perhaps for now I'll just post a picture of my recent Ogopogo sighting on my way to our SUN FM studios on Bernard:

Michael Jackson provided the soundtrack to my life...
Programming Note: SUN FM will celebrate the music of the late Michael Jackson on a special edition of the the Lost 80’s and 90’s Brunch (9am-noon Sunday June 28th)
1:15am:
I’ve often wondered what it would be like to have to be broadcasting when news breaks that rocks the world. Today I experienced it.
Michael Jackson- the King of Pop- died today.
Never did I ever imagine I’d have to ever type those words, let alone tell you that on-air. Today was a surreal experience and although the majority of my show was filled with your reactions and thoughts about the news…it’s only now sinking in for me. Us radio folk are often so busy trying to bring you the news when something like this happens that we often don’t have a free moment to reflect on it ourselves.
I can’t believe he’s gone. I feel like I lost part of my childhood today, as his music was the soundtrack to my life growing up. My mom called me tonight to talk about it because she knows that I’ve always been a huge fan of Michael Jackson the entertainer. When I was younger, I watched my MJ “Moonwalker” VHS so many times, I wore out the tape. When my dad bought me Michael Jackson’s “BAD” cassette, it was always in my walkman.
Fast-forward to Grade 8. MJ’s “You Are Not Alone” was song that was playing when I first noticed the girl who would later become my wife.
In Grade 11, I sang and performed as Michael Jackson in the school talent show- complete with a white-sequinned glove, an open royal blue dress shirt that parachuted when I would turn, and black dress shoes with white socks that you could see when I moonwalked across the stage.
Then, just last year I lived out a dream I’ve had since I was a child of learning the entire Michael Jackson “Thriller” dance routine. With my friend Bri Cook and the amazing crew at Aradia Fitness, we danced our way into the world record books with “Thrill the World- Kelowna”. It was the largest simultaneous dance of “Thriller” around the world, and we had the biggest turnout in the country. On top of that, we raised over $6500 to help sick kids at KGH through our SUN FM Have a Heart Radiothon.
Suffice it to say, Michael Jackson the performer and singer has played a prominent role in my life, and I do feel a loss today. I not only look at all the memories I have of the King of Pop, I am selfishly sad at the fact we will never get to hear a new song from him again aside from what’s already been recorded. I mentioned on-air that I was hoping to see him if his comeback tour (set to begin in mere days) was brought to North America. He was such a brilliant performer and his songs shaped pop music as we know it today. Usher, Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo, and countless other SUN FM artists all name Michael Jackson as one of their major influences.
I didn’t want to believe it when it was first reported. I hoped that it was just another one of those bad rumours on the internet. This time it was real. I received more phone calls, e-mails, facebook messages, tweets and texts than I’ve ever had in my radio career. Say what you will about the man’s personal life…it seems everyone agrees that we lost a musical genius today- a man who made an indelible imprint on our generation and pop culture history.
What are your Michael Jackson memories?
Long Live the King of Pop.

A dream come true..."Thrill the World- Kelowna"
Megan Fox...will you accept MY rose?
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well last week this photo made its way around the world:
ouch.
Poor poor kid...you can actually hear his dreams shatter.
I know exactly what that kid must've felt like in this photo. When I was 5 years old, I had a huge crush on "Alice" from Alice in Wonderland. So imagine my excitement when I went to Disneyland for the first time and saw her in person! I rushed up to take a photo with her, but then that stupid Mad Hatter yelled "OH! It's tea time!" and their entourage proceeded to run away. So in a photo album somewhere, there's a picture of me looking much like that kid in the Megan Fox photo...running after Alice, trying desperately to get her attention to no avail.
But I digress.
Back to Megan Fox. How could the newly-single Transformers hottie have been so heartless? Truth is...she didn't even see the him. So she's formally apologized to him and has given him an open invite to accept his rose.
Sure, it's not a date, a kiss, or anything remotely close to the fantasy life they'd live together in his head, but it's something! So the search is on to find that kid ASAP! Imagine if he got a chance to take her up on her offer? It'd make his
Good luck, brother!

Where you can get a "Screamer" in Kelowna!
Heyo!
With summer on the horizon, there's a Kelowna-favorite summertime treat that people go CRAZY over- the "Screamer".
I confess...despite living here for almost 4 years, up until this week I'd never even heard of one! Apparently I've been living under a rock! As soon as I admitted it on my show, immediately I got bombarded by e-mails, texts, calls, and facebook messages from listeners who couldn't believe I had never experienced the treat, which is a mix of a slurpee/slushee/slush and soft-serve ice cream. Some places call them "Yaks", or "Slammers".
I figured I'd never heard of it because I'm allergic to milk, but then during my show, Brent from Knox Mountain Market on Ellis dropped by our studios with one for me- they serve non-dairy Screamers! I tried it on-air, and I immediately understood what all the fuss was about- they're so good!!
Here's an example of how passionate people are about their "Screamers":
Janelle Rhode wrote:
You have never had a screamer????????? WHO ARE YOU!!! You havent lived until you have had a crush flavored screamer while stuck in traffic with no air conditioning...ahh...how i love summer...
Shannon White wrote:
Hey Kevin, The best screamer ever is at Woodsdale store on the Bottom of Wood Lake road in Winfield. I grew up in Winfield and the highlight of my summers where riding my bike to the store to get a scream... the best is Crush Lime with lots of white soft ice cream!!! MMMM...
Katie Balkwill wrote:
Welcome to the world of screamers Kevin!
I'm new in Kelowna and have had a great deal of discussion with my roommate as to where you can get a screamer in Kelowna (I am also trying to convert her to the land of screamers).~ I've heard rumors of a place in Rutland, but hoping there is somewhere close to the beaches you can get one.~ HELP!
Cheers!
So here's a quick list of the places where you can get a Screamer in Kelowna!
Canadian Tire Gas Bar on Hwy 97 and Leckie
Mohawk on Hwy 97 in Westbank
Woodsdale corner store in Windfield
Husky across from Pizza Hut on 97 in Kelowna
Bankhead Store on Bernard Ave in Kelowna
Knox Mountain Market on Ellis (they serve non-dairy Screamers!)
Anywhere else you can get one? Leave a comment!
As always, thanks for listening, and here's to a great summer filled with hot days and cool Screamers!

Today I become…a Ghostbuster.
...Who Ya Gonna Call?...
Today my childhood dream comes true, and I will become…a Ghostbuster. Allow me to “geek-out” for a few moments…
If you’re a loyal listener (especially of the SUN FM Lost 80’s and 90’s Brunch, Sundays 9-noon), you know that I’m a HUGE Ghostbusters fan. Growing up in the 80’s…Egon, Ray, Winston, and Peter were my “Superman”, my “Batman”…they were my childhood heroes. I had the action figures, watched the cartoon, and was even published in one of the issues of the official Ghostbusters comic book when my mom sent in a photo of me when I was 7 and dressed up in full GB gear (I wish I had thought to scan it while at my parents’ house last week in Vancouver to show you).
But it’s not like I ever outgrew the dream of wanting to become a Ghostbuster. If you’ve added me on facebook, you’ll notice that Ghostbusters 1 and 2 are still listed as my top 2 favorite movies. In fact here in my office at home, I’m looking at an authentic film cel that Katie got me for one of my birthdays. I love it so much.
While I may be one extreme example of a fan, it’s undeniable that Ghostbusters has made an indelible imprint on our pop culture history. Last summer at Universal Studios I hit the jackpot when I found a t-shirt with a glow-in-the-dark GB logo on it, and whenever I wear it at the station or around Kelowna someone stops me to ask where I got it.
To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the original movie, today Sony has released the original film on Blu-Ray…and the long-awaited “Ghostbusters: The Video Game”!!! All of the original cast members lent their voices to the game and the storyline picks up 2 years after Ghostbusters 2 ended…it practically serves as a “Ghostbusters 3”. Here’s Dan Ackroyd (aka: Ray Stanz) chatting up the game’s premise and news on the NEW Ghostbusters movie in development (I’m in heaven haha):
I kid you not when I say I’ve been waiting for this day for a looong time. Not only has it been 20 years since the last Ghostbusters movie, but this video game was originally supposed to come out last year. Suffice it to say, once my show’s done today I’m rushing home to live out my dream of becoming a Ghostbuster :-)
And now to "exorcise" the song that's been running through your head while reading this blog:
As always, thanks for listening (and allowing me to geek-out)!

Want more? Well, my friend…sit back and enjoy this 2:44 minute educational video:

Video: Eminem Freaks Out @ MTV Movie Awards + Twilight: New Moon- Trailer!
Last night's MTV Move Awards could've been called the Twilight Awards as the movie swept the night. So, will the second movie- filmed mostly here in BC- be just as successful? If you missed it last night, here's your first look at "New Moon" (despite the fact that I don't "get" this whole fascination with Robert Pattinson lol):
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON trailer in HD
Despite Twilight's 5 wins (including Best Movie), THIS is the clip everyone's talking about today...watch Eminem's freak out when a bare-bottomed Sacha Baron Cohen - in character as the gay Austrian fashion reporter Bruno - "fell" from a suspended wire into the face of Eminem:
**WARNING: Not for all ages**
What do you think? Real or staged? It didn't look like Eminem was in on the joke at all...then again...he DID win an Oscar a few years ago...
...ok it was for Best Original Song, but still...

Simon Cowell has a heart after all...(video)
The first part of this video is heart-breaking, but Simon Cowell proves that despite what we've come to expect from him on American Idol, he does have a heart. Watch as he sticks up for a talented 10 year old girl who sadly forgot the words during her semi-final performance on Britan's Got Talent (aka: the show that made Susan Boyle a household name):
Later in the show, the judges decided to advance her to the finals. While some people online are saying they shouldn't have given her a second chance, Simon did the right thing by at least giving her another chance. If anything, he saved himself (as the creator of the show) from the inevitable mobs of angry people who would've blasted them for not having any compassion for the poor girl. Good on ya, Simon!

Jon & Kate Plus 8 = Fake?
So over the weekend TLC ran their "Jon & Kate Plus 8 Marathon" and boy did they mean MARATHON. It wasn't like 5 episodes in a row, but if you did any channel flipping at all this weekend that show was ALWAYS ON!
...well TLC's evil plans to brainwash us all worked and I tivo'ed the season premiere last night. While I knew that most (if not all) reality TV shows have some sort of "staged" elements to them, I was pretty shocked when I found out just how scripted out "Jon & Kate Plus 8" is. Perez Hilton (who you can hear weekdays at 11:45am and 6:52pm on SUN FM) caught this on Kate's sister-in-law's (Julie)blog:
"Since TLC is airing the old episodes, I thought I shed some light on how the show works.
When the show first started, Kate made a wishlist of things that she wanted, and that became the theme of each episode–the carpet, twin's room, bunk beds, cow, hairplugs, teeth whitening, trips, etc. EVERYTHING that you see them do or buy is completely paid for out of the budget for the show or traded for free advertising. Kate went on and on about saving up for special days, you saw her paying for things, she talked about budgeting, etc. It is all for the appearance that they are a struggling family with 8 children. They needed to be relatable. They didn't pay for any of it.
The episodes are also staged. Here's how it works…there is a staff of people reading these blogs and they base the shows around what people are talking about.
...The Christmas episode from 2007; Producers told Kate that the viewers wanted to see her show appreciation to their helpers. They told her what the episode was going to be. I think they baked cookies and then went caroling (of course this was probably one of their many 'traditions"–those are all fake too). Kate threw a fit. She didn't want to do it, but she did…because they were trying to pacify the viewers.
Don't believe everything you see. The children are also being prompted to say or do certain things.
...Of course, you've all figured out that they are showing Kate cook/bake to promote her upcoming cookbook. The show has now turned into a show about a family with a reality show–move to a mansion, cross-over shows, book tour, talk shows…
...They will only show what they think people want to see and it isn't real anyway. They will probably drag this out (J&K's 'relationship') for the entire season. They just string the viewers along hoping that they will come back for more."
While I knew that things like Jon's hair transplant and their trip to Disneyland were paid for by the show, and that TLC was milking this relationship issue for all it's worth...I had no idea how staged the rest of the show is. Interesting, considering it started as a documentary 5 years ago.
That said, last night's episode did bring up something quite funny...what's the deal with kids and pinatas?! (see 1 min-1:30mins)
Kate's TOTALLY RIGHT! How sick is it that we celebrate childrens' birthdays by BEATING TO DEATH their favorite TV characters?
Elmo disapproves.

Happy McHappy Day!
You know that little voice in your head that says "Ooooh...you should have a Big Mac today...mmmm..."? Today's the day to indulge because you'll be helping out kids here in the Okanagan!
$1 from every McMuffin sandwich, Happy Meal and Big Mac sold today will be donated to the YMCA/YWCA in Kelowna!
The event is happening all day today (May 6th) and SUN FM is taking over the Harvey McDonald's, across from the Orchard Park Shopping Centre! I just got back from volunteering a couple hours there (mmm...I love the smell of fries), Susan Knight was broadcasting there this morning, and Bri Cook and Sonia Sidhu will be there this afternoon!
BTW, an interesting tidbit I shared on the show last year after talking to Reena, the regional marketing director for McDonalds:
Do you know what Grimace is?

This might shock you...

I know. Turns your world upside-down, right?

Earth Day: Even Disney Recycles! (their movies) [plus SUN FX info inside]
Wednesday April 22nd 2009
Ok so if you've been following me on my twitter (http://twitter.com/KevinLimSunFM), I'm super thrilled to have booked my first-ever trip to Disney World & Orlando later this year! My boss makes fun of me for loving theme parks so much, but I figure he's just jealous that he doesn't get to ride the Tower of Terror till he pukes.
Speaking of Disney, in celebration of Earth Day, Disney Nature Films has released a new documentary in theatres called "Earth". It looks spectacular! It also seems that Disney is really into recycling too!
...even their movies apparently.
BTW, a shout-out to all the hard-working administrative professionals, as it's also Administrative Professionals Day! If you're a boss, don't forget to do something nice for your Admin staff! Even a hug would be nice! (but check with HR first).
Finally...I have a strong feeling that somebody (hopefully you) will finally win our SUN FX jackpot this afternoon! It's at an astounding $5347! I'll have your chance to play this afternoon on my show...don't miss a moment of it because if you miss that cue to call, someone else could be winning all your money (and that's not very fair, is it?). Be sure to check up on all the previous wrong guesses and the increasingly obvious clues HERE!
Good luck! :-)

WOW. Standing Ovation Indeed!!!!!
When was the last time you gave a standing ovation? Not just because you didn't want to be the only jerk still sitting when you realized everyone around you was standing, but because you witnessed something AMAZING?
Watching this video of Jennifer Holliday's surprise duet with Jennifer Hudson last night on a concert stop in Atlanta, I wanted to join the crowd and get on my feet...
Wow. Wow. WOW! Chills up my spine as the song went on! It's so refreshing to hear some raw, natural, un-processed, LIVE talent at a concert that can evoke that kind of emotion from the crowd!
Speaking of "blowing the roof off", our Kelowna Rockets are on their way to the Memorial Cup and take on the Vancouver Giants in the WHL Western Finals!
...do you know what the green creature on their logo is?
I confessed this week on the show that after all these years I never put it together that it's supposed to be Ogopogo! I thought it was a DRAGON!!! Thankfully lots of you called and e-mailed saying you thought the same thing. Well in case you missed it...the Director of Marketing for the Rockets, Anne-Marie Hamilton, was listening to my confession on-air and called to say it **IS** a "fire-breathing dragon, inspired by Ogopogo". PHEW! I don't feel so dumb anymore...haha
If you want to cheer on our Rockets, our sister station, AM1150 has all the play-by-play action! Here's the schedule:
Saturday - Live from Vancouver: pregame 6:30 Puck drops at 7:00

Want Flo Rida's Phone Number?
You wanna call a SUN FM artist and chat about his Big 6@6 #1 song, "Right Round"? Okay, here you go:
(305)-528-2786*
Yup...that's Flo Rida's actual cell phone number, straight from the source. He's given out his phone number for fans to reach him, and he says he does his best to pick up or text you back!
*Kids...remember to ask your parents before you call though, because it is a long distance number. Here he is talking about why he's giving out his cell phone number:
He says he talks to about 30% of the people who call or text him, and so I've been trying to get him on the show and see if he'll answer our call! FLO RIDA....PICK UP!!!!

"Why didn't anyone tell me?!?!"

...yes...it even happens to Brad Pitt...
As heard on the show: 3 o'clock Hot Topic: "Why Didn't Anyone Tell Me?!"
Ever go through a whole day and something was weird about how you looked...but no one told you? Yeah...it's happened to all of us. One of my good friends at SUN FM (for privacy reasons, we'll call her S. Sidhu) called me up today to tell me she'd accidentally gone through the whole day wearing her Lulus backwards...and no one told her. So it was the start of a very amusing Hot Topic: "Why didn't anyone tell me?!"
A lot of great stories like the listener who went through an important business meeting and then realizing his fly was down, and the lady who had been running errands all day and once she got home she realized she had a thong from her laundry static-cling (clung?) onto her back! Oh then there was the husband who accidentally wore his wife's jeans all day and the girl who did an interview and didn't realize her dress was backwards till she left. hahaha! :-)
Here's some of the other stories you sent in:
"Hey Kevin! I went to work one time with makeup on only one side of my face. I have put makeup on my one eye, and then left! Must have been a crazy morning! "
-Janelle
"Haha, one day I decided to wear bright red lipstick to work - the kind that apparently lasts several hours. Anyways, it wasn't until my sister showed up near the end of my shift and asked "why are you wearing just lip liner" that i looked in the mirror and saw that only a thick, red life of lipstick remained on my lips. It looked absolutely terrible."
-Gussie
"I went through a whole day in grade 12 with my makeup concealer not rubbed in under my eyes...I came home and I was shocked! Big white/yellow makeup moons beneath each eye...I did have my glasses on all day though, thank god...but it was still super noticeable. No one said anything either!"
-Hayley"yeah, i had my skirt tucked in my undwear at school."
-Suzanna"I had sweats on one day, with a "Gators Gym" logo on them.Wore them backwards half a day until one of the parents(from my kids' school)came up and told me.I was so thankful as it was soo noticeable because of the logo!Must of been half asleep still when I got dressed that day!!"
-Tracy
"I had a dryer sheet stuck to my bum all day until this sweet old lady pulled it off and handed it to me."
-Allison
"After an afternoon nap my left eyebrow was all messed and i went out for groceries...hahahahaha, came back put the groceries away and went to the potty...hahahaa, saw my freakin eye brow and laughed my butt off.....i looked RIDONKULOUS!!! .... still a hottie though....hahahahha...have a good evening LIM!"
-Crystal
Thanks for the great stories! Feel free to add yours by commenting on this post!

Leaving Fast Food Trays and Garbage = Creating Jobs? YEAH RIGHT!
As heard on the show…

DO IT.
Monday’s 3 o’clock Hot Topic started off with my rant that “I don’t get it when people leave their trays and garbage behind on tables at fast food restaurants when they’re walking right by the garbage on the way out!”. Then a big debate begun on whether or not you should clean up after yourself or leave it there for an employee there to clean up after you.
Here’s the thing…if you want to leave it there and admit that it’s because you’re lazy….fine. I’m not your parent (but I will probably secretly wonder why you couldn’t be bothered since the garbage is RIGHT THERE). BUT…don’t try to convince me that you’re doing it because you’re “creating jobs”. YEAH RIGHT.
I couldn’t believe that some people honestly were trying to pass off their laziness by saying they were doing a “good thing”. One listener even said that I was being “narrow-minded” and “not getting the big picture”. He said that work could be done by someone who could use a job.
Whoa. WHat?? So should we all be throwing our garbage out the window of our cars when we’re driving because we’re “creating jobs” for city workers? Should I be punching random people I see on Bernard Ave because I’m “creating jobs’ for nurses?
There was only one restaurant that listeners said they heard of someone specifically hired to clean up after our lazy selves, so in every other case it’s just another thing for those overworked, under-paid employees to do. Realistically, it often gets done by the next customer after you who has to reluctantly clean up YOUR MESS. No job created there.
Here’s another fault to the whole “creating jobs” theory…if more restaurants started “creating jobs” because we can’t clean up after ourselves, where would they get the money to pay for their salary? Yep. They raise the prices. Then we all start complaining about it. All because we were too lazy to do it ourselves to begin with.
Another listener called and said “so I assume you take your dishes back at the Keg?” *sigh* No…as someone who worked as a server at White Spot for 4 years while going to school, when you go to a full-serve restaurant, you’re tipping for the service of someone to SERVE you the food and take it away after. That said, don’t make more mess than necessary just because there’s someone there to clean up after you…it’s rude and comes across like you think you’re better than them and can treat them however you’d like (that’s a rant for another day).
Anyway, do what you will the next time you’re dining in a fast food restaurant…just don’t leave your tray and righteously say it’s because you’re doing a good thing.
Here’s some of the written responses that I got from listeners:
“I totally disagree with your caller who says it will create a job. If the lady at the cash register does not have time, the boss will say, do not worry the next people will clear the table it they do not find a place to sit. I agree with you, it is so disrespectful and lazy for people to live their mess behind. I always make sure that I clear the table because I tell my kids to put their dishes after every meal so it is just showing my kids a good example. These people that say it creates job, it is probably a job for their children one day.”
-Susana C.
"this is unreal you clean up if there is a clean up station, not like the keg where they serve you in that fashion. I call this "movie theater mentality" and i see it when i take my son out and its hard for me to role model for him when everyone around you is a slob and just making a mess and walking out the door. A job in fast food has enough duties within its self and they do not get paid enough to be butlers!! i blame parents across the world!!!!
-Jaymin
“I used to clean-up my own table but then I got tired of sitting at a "clean" table only to discover that it is sticky from pop, juice, ketchup, etc. I realized that the staff only come out to clean/wipe the tables when the lobby "appeared" dirty. If everyone always cleared their own garbage; I believe that the tables would never get wiped.”
-Warren
“Hi Kevin, I agree 100% with you that it isn't right for people to leave their fast food garbage lying around. I think it is lazy and extremely inconsiderate. I don't think that it creates another job, I think that it puts more stress on the current employees. I also believe it ruins someone else's experience at the restaurant. There's nothing worse than having your hands full with food and kids and having to clear a table before you can use it. If that's being narrow minded then so be it. I think people need to have more consideration for their fellow beings. We concern ourselves about what our classmates/coworkers think, for the most part we consider our neighbours and how our actions may affect them, but we don't give a second thought to anyone we don't personally know. Its just sad.
Have a good afternoon,
-Trudy
"Hey Kevin, For your Hot Topic. I used to work at McDonald's and there were MANY days where the customer levels were so high that no one could get out from behind the tills or out of the grill area to clean up the mess left behind by customers. The play room was the worst. Why can't parents clean up after their kids?! It doesn't take that much effort to put your garbage in the bin so the next person doesn't have to do it for you. Obviously that guy who called you has never worked in fast food. You can't always have a designated lobby person when people are lined up 10 deep and you have all the registers open. JUST CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF PEOPLE!"

This is it! The 2009 Junos are just hours away, and last night (Saturday) 32 of the 39 awards were given out at the non-televised awards gala! It's here that was able to get even MORE autographs for our SUN FM Have a Heart Radiothon t-shirt, and met some really great people!
A big shout-out to Rick Campanelli from ET Canada (aka: "Rick the Temp") for offering to get Sarah McLachlan to sign our t-shirt for us! Rick also joined us on-air on Saturday and I have to say, he and his producer Natalie were 2 of the nicest people I've met this whole trip so far!
By far the highlight of the night, was when I asked the Barenaked Ladies (who just won the Juno for best Children's Album for "Snacktime") to perform a freestyle rap about the Junos...and they did!! The fun starts at 1:20min!
haha! That's why the Barenaked Ladies RULE! I can't believe how spontaneously funny those guys are!

What was that song again?
As featured on the show...
So you've got a song stuck in your head, and you want to request it here on SUN FM. Only problem is...you don't know what it's called, or who it's by. In fact, you can't even recall enough of the words to search the lyrics on the internet. Blerg!
What do you do?
Well there's a couple options if you can't get through on the hitsline (250-762-HITS) to ask one of us at SUN FM:
If you've seen the commercial for the iPhone...there's a cool free app called Shazam where you can hold it up to the radio speaker and within seconds it'll tell you what song it is! I've tried it out, and it works! Even with remixes on our 5 o'clock Traffic Jam! However, that's only helpful when the song is actually playing.
So then what? Well there's this website you can go to...
www.midomi.com
And all you need is a computer microphone to hum the melody! Just like Shazam, it'll take a few seconds and compare it to its database of songs and show you what songs match! It's a bit more bit-and-miss, depending on how much you suck at humming (like me), but the more you give it, the closer the match!
Try it out! Then be sure to text us in-studio at 78636 (S U N F M) on your cell with your vote for the Big 6@6 countdown to hear it on SUN FM! Only 25 cents per vote- powered by TAC mobility.
Thanks for listening!

Katy Perry vs Flo-Rida (audio inside!)
As heard on the show...
I got an e-mail from one of my good radio buddies, Matt Van Essen, with this awesome mash-up of Flo-Rida's "Right Round" and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl". Michael Jackson is BACK! (press conference video inside!)
For years, there've been rumours that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, would be making a "comeback". Today, for once, it's true. Today he announced a series of 10 "final" concerts in London at the O2 Arena, starting in July.
For the longest time, "Michael Jackson" had pretty much become a punchline. You could say anything then follow it up with "Michael Jackson" and it'd be funny. I admit, I love taking cracks at MJ too, but I only kid because I love.
Seriously, when I was a kid growing up in the 80's I used to watch my Michael Jackson "Moonwalker" VHS non-stop, listen to my "Bad" cassette tape in my walkman till the batteries died, and even did my MJ impression as part of my Grade 11 talent show singing performance. An adult, I even enjoyed those cheesy Michael Jackson tribute shows at the all-inclusive resorts we stayed at in Mexico (even though they were pretty terrible...Katie can vouch for that). Oh yeah, and I also helped organize Kelowna's successful attempt to "Thrill the World" into the World Record Books back in October.
Needless to say, with today's announcement that he's making a "comeback" series of concerts (his first of this kind in over 12 years), I actually got pretty excited to see him actually looking relatively good again:
(LOL @ the fan 8 seconds into the video)
...I was totally expecting him to get wheeled onto the stage in pajamas, barely understandable while talking through a surgical mask. But wow...he was surpisingly coherent, and even looked pretty good!
...well, at least compared to this:
Look at all those people, screaming like they did back in the 80's! While I'm not a fan of the guy as a person(he's a bit too wacky for taste), I am a fan of his music, his sound, his moves, and his legacy. He's inspired so many of our SUN FM artists, I can't begin to start naming them all off.
While I have no plans to jump onto a plane and catch his series of concerts in the UK, I'm encouraged to hear him say "this is it...for London", which leads me to believe he'll do more touring around North America in the future, and you bet if he ever comes to Vancouver, I'll be there.
While I continue to listen to more of his songs on my iPod, I'll leave you with this:
...that, according to age progression computer programs, is what he would've looked like today without all that plastic surgery.
See? I can still make fun of the guy!

Introducing..."The Relationship Bill" (photos inside)
As discussed today on the show...
In life there are breakups and then there are BREAKUPS...the type that you want to figure out how to get back at them for breaking your heart. Well you've heard of the pre-nup, and now there's a guy in Australia who's started the "Relationship Bill".
No, not this kind of bill...

...nope...I'm talking about THIS kind of bill:
Yes, after his girlfriend broke up with him, he conned her into blindly signing a so-called "binding" document to make her REPAY everything he spent on her during the relationship!
WHAT?!
Is this guy for real? Has it come to this now? Whatever happened to chalking it up to a bad experience, learning from it, and moving on with your life?
Well the girlfriend- shocked by this "relationship bill"- decided to scan it and post it online for the world to see:
She's also got a blog up here for you to follow along and see larger pics of the "bill": http://therelationshipbill.blogspot.com/
We had a nice discussion about it on the show, and while the majority of listeners agreed that this guy is whack, there were a couple to come to the side of the guy, saying it's a bold statement. Honestly, if he was stupid enough to try to buy her love (whether or not it was on his own accord of if she's high maintence), he should just suck it up like everyone else. Even if it was just to make a statement, pulling something like this only reinforces the girlfriend's thoughts that this guy is a loser.
One listener brought up a good point:
"What's next? Are we going to have to start checking references before dating someone?!"
Would YOU ever consider giving your ex a "relationship bill"?

"Jai Ho" Remix Inside!
Seriously, this song has been stuck in my head since the Academy Awards this weekend...I can see how it won Best Song in a Motion Picture!
If you haven't already seen "Slumdog Millionaire", it's a great movie (and apparently the world agrees...it won the Oscar for Best Picture this weekend and a gazillion other awards in the past several months). At the end during the Bollywood dance, there's this really catchy song, "Jai Ho".
Well, not wanting to miss out on the chance to captialize on "Slumdog"'s popularity, Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls has just added new English vocals to the track (but she didn't directly translate the original lyrics).
As heard today on the show...check it out!
"You are the reason that I breathe/ You are the reason that I still believe/ You are my destiny/ Jai ho."
What do you think? The original track has actually made the Top 10 iTunes tracks this week...do you think the PCD remix will fair well? For me, the catchy part of the song is the great beat and chorus, which remains the same in the remix. So if it means more mainstream success for the song and radio stations like SUN FM pick it up, I can have more impromptu Bollywood dance sessions in studio during my show!
By the way, if you watched "The Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious", SUN FM is proud to present Girlicious AND Danny Fernandes to the Level Night Club March 7th, and I've got tickets all week with "Sun on Demand"! Just e-mail me your 4 favorite SUN FM songs and your phone number, and you could be programming SUN FM and winning these tickets at 4pm!
And while we're at it...this week with Phone Tap (weekdays at 5:55pm) I've got your chance to win a double movie pass to...The Jonas Brothers 3D music concert starting this Friday at the Grand 10 Cinemas! Listen for your cue to call just after the 5 o'clock Traffic Jam!

How "Old School" are you? + Facebook Controversy Update

Old School vs New School
For the most part, technology has made it "easier" for us to perform daily tasks. However, sometimes we still would rather take the "old school" option. Take the thousands of people in the US who still have old analog "rabbit ears" for TV reception and are being affected by the analog -> digital switch on TV stations that began today (with the rest of the channels choosing to take a new pushed back date in June). Surprisingly I found out that our very own web guy, Dave, still uses "rabbit ears" for his TV!
On today's
3 o'clock Hot Topic, we talked about the areas in your life that you're still "old school". We heard from listeners who still prefer:
-Using cash over debit cards
-Personal bank tellers over internet banking
-VHS over DVDs (clearly they haven't tried out Tivo yet...SO AWESOME)
-Maps vs GPS devices
-Handwritng over typing something up on the computer
-Writing out shopping lists over using PDA memo functions on cellphones
-Phoning someone over "texting"
-CDs over Mp3s (I mean, how else will you know if you've been singing the lyrics wrong the entire time without the trusty liner booklet that comes with the CD?)
My personal fav though is developing photos over just storing them digitally. There's something much more fun about pull out an album with and reminicing over all your old photos rather than sitting infront of your computer screen looking at the slideshow.
But maybe staying "old school" isn't so bad after all. As it turns out, our friends and family who have resisted the "new school" facebook-age might have something to be thankful for. It was discovered in the last 24 hours that due to a subtle change in the terms of service on Facebook, they own the rights to every picture and video you upload to your account...even if you delete your account.
"Now they can print and sell posters of the pictures you took, turn your posts into advertising jingles, whatever. Make a million bucks, and keep it all. Imagine a fun line of Facebook postcards, or a coffee table book, 'The Faces of Facebook.' They can do this, and Facebook members themselves won't see a dime, because they gave away a license to do so."
However, the CEO of Facebook says "Just trust us".
Here's hoping we can! So from now on, if you're going to go "new school" and keep uploading photos of yourself...make sure they're at least good ones of you.

Behind the Scenes at SUN FM- Part 3 (Video) + more!
Hey-o! As we’re 1 year away today from the 2010 Winter Olympics here in BC, here at SUN FM we’re counting down the weeks until we move into our new state-of-the-art studios! Here’s your sneak preview of what they’ll look like!
While we’re on Youtube…if you missed it last night, here’s the video that everyone’s talking about today: Joaquin Phoenix on The Late Show with David Letterman, talking about his new…umm…look? persona?
While some say he was under the influence of something, I still think this is some kind of hoax that they're filming for a "mock-umentary".
Finally, ever wondered what a woman carrying 8 kids looks like?
*gasp!!*

Is it SPRING yet???
Way to tease us, Mother Nature! These last couple days we had beautiful sunshine, it started to warm up…heck, I even traded in my snow boots for my runners again!
…then it snowed again.
Albeit, it didn’t snow much, but enough to make me consider hibernating like a bear till spring. It’s weird, because normally I LOVE snow! I’ve always told people that I’m a winter child and there’s something magical about snow. In fact, if you’re a loyal listener, I was like a kid in a candy store last year the first couple times it snowed!
But for some reason it’s different this year.
Maybe it’s because it’s post-Christmas and it doesn’t really feel special anymore.
Maybe it’s because the bitter cold at the beginning of winter turned a lot of us off.
Maybe it’s because I had giant killer icicles in my backyard this year that threatened to eat me alive…
Yes. This was in my backyard not too long ago...
Winter can stay up at Big White for now, and I’m ready for spring!

SMILE! New Driver's Licenses are coming! (pic inside)
Coming March 2nd, you'll be able to get these nifty high-tech BC driver's licenses that include facial recognition technology and other security features to protect you against things like identity theft! Neat! Here's what they'll look like:
...now if only the new technology can prevent you from a bad photo. Blerg! Have you ever had a bad license photo before? I once had one that made me look like someone off of "To Catch a Predator". Not fun.
Needless to say the day I got that photo, I didn't get the nice person who allowed me to preview it first, so imagine my surprise when it arrived in the mail.

Chris Brown arrested for assaulting...Rihanna :-(
No doubt this is the biggest story in Hollywood today. If you wondered why Chris Brown and Rihanna "no-showed" at the Grammys last night, Chris was busy being arrested on alleged assault charges and according to police reports this morning, the victim is his girlfriend Rihanna.
While Chris is innocent until proven guilty, this story keeps getting worse and worse. TMZ.com got ahold of the police report and it notes that Robyn Fenty (aka: Rihanna) was the victim, and that she suffered visible injuries. Chris apparently high-tailed it by the time the police got there, but later was smart enough to turn himself in. He was later released on $50,000 bail and will stand trial next month.
While I hope that this is nothing more than a story getting overblown, it's hard not to ask how any man could treat his woman- or anyone for that matter- like this, is beyond my understanding.
On a related (and brighter) note, due to the last-minute cancellation of Chris and Rihanna's respective performances at the Grammys, the organizers whipped together an ensemble performance of "Let's Stay Together" (kinda ironic come to think of it) by Justin Timberlake, Al Green, Keith Urban, and Boyz II Men. Who would've known this was thrown together last minute? They're all such pros!

The SECRET to selling your house is…
While it's no secret that the housing market here in the Okanagan is in a bit of a slump, today on the show we discovered there are secrets on how to increase the chances of your home selling!
Today's 3 o'clock Hot Topic was suggested by Gwen, who's house has been on the market for awhile now and so far no bites. So listeners called in their secrets on how to make your house seem more appealing and welcoming when you're showing it!
The BIGGEST secret weapon...
Yup. Fresh baked cookies. And it’s not just if you’re selling to this guy:
The aroma of baked cookies, or a fresh loaf of bread automatically gives the people at your open house positive feelings and makes them feel at home. Cinnamon sticks in the oven at 200 degrees was also suggested, as was apple pie. Sadly, "curry" was not on the list, so that probably means I'd have to air out my place before showing it in the future. haha
Suck at cooking? Apparently you can buy an aerosol that smells like fresh baked cookies! It's certainly better than smelling burnt cookies! You can also try putting vanilla extract on light bulbs- they’ll heat up and disperse around the room…no baking needed!
Other tips listeners to the show called-in:
Lighting- turn on all lights when you're showing, even during the day because it accents the amount of room and creates a vibrant ambiance.
De-clutter - anything on countertops or desks should be hidden
Pets- don't leave your pets at home during a showing. Potential owners might worry about the damage pets have caused, and some are allergic to them.
De-personalizing- take out your family photos and take down portraits because other people want to envision themselves in your home- not your family in their new home.
Finally...you can hire a "Home Stager" to do prep your house with all these hints and more! Some will even bring in art and rearrange your furniture to help! A small investment can in turn help you sell faster and therefore increase your profit in the end!
We heard from 2 listeners who are professional "Home Stagers":
"Staging in Style" (contact Bree at: 250-870-3344)
"Centre Stage Interior Decorating and Home Staging" (contact Tammy at: 681-3733)
See all the things you learn when you tune in? :-) Hope this helps! Have any more tips? Leave a comment!

When complimenting a woman...avoid this ONE word.
As we found out today on the 3 o'clock Hot Topic, when a guy wants to tell his woman that she's attractive...avoid the use of "cute". I, like many guys, didn't know that was a baaaaad word until today.
Sure, if that's the goal and she's got pigtails and overalls on, you might get away with it. But if you mean "good looking", it doesn't always translate. Our SUN FM Hitslines rang busy for the hour and my inbox was filled with women who agreed that even with the best intentions, "cute" ranks at the bottom of adjectives they'd like to be referred to as. Apparently, "cute" is only when you describe puppies, babies, and little girls in Sunday School outfits. Some even hear "cute" and think he means "average".
It's funny, I could hear the men of the Okanagan taking good notes during the show, as we learned that some adjectives are better than others.
Words like stunning, striking, gorgeous, amazing, and incredible all got high votes from our female SUN FM listeners as their favs. Surprisingly, "beautiful" was high on some lists, but others considered it a bit generic. And what about "hot" and "sexy"? Some say they're only good in flirtatious situations, but otherwise pretty one-dimensional.
Oh, and as one listener passionately pointed out, don't follow up your compliment with "...to me". Granted, from a guy's perspective, we might think it's personalizing an already sweet sentiment, but with the wrong emphasis, it kinda cancels out the compliment. Apparently, you might as well be saying "...but everyone else thinks you're an ug-o" :-X
Ahh....the things you learn by tuning in every afternoon ;-)

Sucking the fun out of Christmas...
Hey-o!
What a fun couple days it's been on the show with you! I wanted to take a second and reflect more on Tuesday's 3 o'clock Hot Topic, as we discussed the newest retail holiday trend ...the "Christmas Gift Registry". Helpful or just plain tacky?
Just like for your wedding, you can now go into certain stores or malls and select a list of what items you'd like your friends and family to buy for you (sometimes they give you a nifty laser barcode scanning gun to do it). They call it the modern-day version of the good ol' Christmas Wish List we used to write to Santa and share with our loved ones. It's a foolproof way to make sure you never get anyone a "bad gift" ever again...or receive one.
While some listeners said it's very useful to look at a checklist of wanted items to help in their holiday shopping, the majority said it was tacky. I fully agree. While I don't think that giving someone hints is a bad thing if they're stuck for ideas, I think this focuses too much on the "getting" for Christmas, devalues the "thought" that goes into gift-buying, and most importantly...it ruins the fun of Christmas!
I mean, who doesn't like surprises? There's something really exciting about not knowing what's under that wrapping paper as you're about to open it on Christmas morning. If you already know what to expect...what's the fun in that? BUT WAIT! What happens if you get a present that well...sucks? Couldn't a Christmas Gift Registry prevent someone from wasting their hard-earned money on buying something you don't want, and help put it toward getting you what you'd truly like? Sure. But a gift certificate to their favorite store still gives them the option to get what they want and you show some insight on the places they like to shop. It's the age old saying, "it's the thought that counts".
It's also not really the same to compare the Christmas Gift Registry to a Wedding Registry. With a wedding, the couple is telling you what they need...it's a chance to kindly request for appliances, dishware, and other useful/fun items that will help jumpstart your new life together. With 100+ people, it's also good to have a registry to see what others have already bought for the couple so they're not stuck with 100 toasters. With the Christmas Gift Registry, it comes across as greedy. Most of the time it's not what you need...it's what you want. Plus, part of the fun is the magic of giving, and the "thought" that goes behind each gift. I always like to see how well my friends and family know me. Also, there's something special about watching a person's face when you've gotten them something bang-on that they love...and you figured it out all on your own.
So thumbs down on the Christmas Gift Registry... it's a total fun-sucker. If you're worried about not knowing what to get someone...ask their friends/family members, or simply attach a gift receipt so they can return it if they don't like it, right? But if you're the type of person who honestly doesn't care to be surprised and don't see how it will ruin your Christmas...you'll find the barcode scanner gun at customer service.

The Puppy Cam!
Ok seriously, no matter what kind of day you're having, this website will make it better...
The Puppy Cam
(Alternate Link HERE)
Watch 6 five week old puppies anytime of the day...it's even better than the Christmas fireplace log on TV!
I'll admit, dogs and I don't usually get along very well. In fact, I'll say it...I don't really like dogs. I wasn't even a cat person till mine came with the package when I met Katie. But something about watching these puppies is so incredibly captivating.
I had a couple SUN FM listeners pass this onto me, and I had to share it with you. At the time of me posting this, they're napping, but at various points throughout the day, watching them play is just as much fun as...well...watching puppies playing.
Parents, just be forewarned that you might be hearing a lot of "I WANT A PUPPY, MOM!!" after they see this.
Something to take your mind off your work today ;-)

Martin Luther King / Obama...1 voice [Video]
You CAN vote on the US election!
Today our friends south of the 49th parallel head to the polls to elect their new President. So who will it be? McCain or Obama?
Many of us here in Canada have invested interest in who will win, as it affects many things here in our country, so who would you like to see become the 44th President of the US?
Even though it's just for fun, you CAN have your say with this eye-opening website:
http://www.iftheworldcouldvote.com
At the time of writing, 87% of the world wants to see Barack Obama become President, while only 12% of the world wants to see McCain win.
When it comes to Canada, the number is even higher, with 89% of us wanting Obama to win tonight.
Cast your vote and make sure to check out their results page to see how the rest of the world would like to see the vote pan out. Interestingly, McCain would only win according to in Albania, Macedonia, and Niue. That's saying a lot.

"SCARE YOUR KIDS!" (SUN FM's On-Air Scare) [Audio + Photos]
Do you have kids who truly deserve a good scare? Are you a parent who loves to have fun at your kids' expense once in awhile? Perhaps you're looking for retribution for all the pranks they like to pull on you? If so, You're not alone!
We've gone through our e-mail entries and have selected 2 very deserving candidates for our "On-Air Scare" this year as we send Crazy Craig Campbell (dressed in a wolfman costume from Calona Costumes on Bernard) to their houses to scare their kids live on the radio!
THURSDAY:
"Hi Kevin,
I laughed so hard last year when I heard the audio tape of the kids screaming when they were scared last year by the masked prankster!
I would love to scare my kids since they spend their time scheming on how to scare me. It's time for Dad to get some payback!! This would be something I would never let them forget!!
-Grant Stevens"
Here's what happened! Check out the audio and photos!
Be listening Friday afternoon at 4:30pm for our NEXT on-air scare!

Halloween Costumes...OVER Snowsuits?!
File this one under "you know you live in Canada when..."
It totally rocked my world yesterday, when I found out that the majority of Canadians from outside BC have memories of going trick-or-treating wearing their costume OVER their snowsuits!!
WHAT?!
Having grown up in Vancouver, my memories of cold Halloweens only meant having to throw on a warm jacket over my costume. I thought that was pretty bad because you'd get all excited about your costume only to cover it up most of the night! The process was this:
Step 1) Knock on door
Step 2) "Trick or Treat!"
Step 3) *unzip jacket and flash the person at the door to show off awesome costume*
Step 4) Accept candy
Step 5) "Thank you!"
Step 6) Walk next door
Step 7) Repeat.
But it was brought to my attention from a SUN FM listener who said that I had it pretty easy, because for him it was often so cold on Halloween, he'd have to buy an oversized costume so it could fit OVER his snowsuit!
The calls started pouring in, and this was the same story from listeners who grew up in: Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario and even as far as New Brunswick! Apparently we here in BC (excluding the Northern parts like Prince George) are the only people in the country that don't have to wear our costumes over our snowsuits!
The best stories were from listeners who've grown up with this crazy Halloween tradition, moved to Kelowna, and unaware that we don't have CRAZY cold temperatures, dressed THEIR kids up in costumes over snowsuits for their first Halloween here! haha I suppose they picked it up pretty quickly that it's not exactly necessary here unless you want to be the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man or a Sumo Wrestler.
So perhaps having to wear a warm jacket on Halloween isn't so bad after all...

Don't know who you should vote for? Help inside!
Don't forget to vote and have your voice heard!
Yes it does matter. Yes it makes a difference. Don't take your right to vote for granted...remember, there are A LOT of people around the world who would give up a lot to be able to vote.
How many of our friends down in the US have been kicking themselves for the past 4 years because they didn't vote? Judging by Bush's popularity rating....probably a lot. Same thing here...let your voice be heard.
One of the reasons why there's a large percentage of voter apathy is because they don't know who to vote for. Who best represents what you believe in? Who will help shape the best Canada for you and your family? If you're still unsure...this link might help you out! Answer a few questions and it'll best match up your beliefs with a political party that suits what you care about.
Furthermore, our friends at our sister station, AM1150 have come up with this comprehensive guide to help you make the most informed decision when you cast your ballot.
See you at the polls!

How to sign up for the "Do Not Call" List- Inside!
Well today's the big day! You can now register for the long-awaited national "Do-not-call" list, to help curb all those telemarketers calling your house!
Have you had it with getting your hopes up everytime the phone rings that it's that hot date calling you back, only to find out that it's a telemarketer? Perhaps would you finally like some peace and quiet during dinner without some lame pre-recorded message telling you how you've won a "free" cruise? Trust me...I've gotten a number of those calls while in-studio doing my show, and while it's fun to record THEM and turn the tables by putting them on the air (see below for audio), it's not so much fun for the rest of us.
You can sign up online at http://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/ or you can call the toll-free numbers: 1-866-580-3625 or 1-888-362-5889
Apparently by 9am this morning there were so many people trying to sign up, that it crashed the system, so it might be a tad slow on the first day, but for the peace and quiet...I'm sure it's worth it!
Note that it won't stop all the telemarketing phone calls...just most. There are some organizations that are exempt from this DNC list, which includes:
The telemarketing exemption list includes:
- Registered charities seeking donations.
- Newspapers looking for subscriptions.
- Political parties and their candidates.
- Companies that have an existing business relationship with a consumer within the previous 18 months.
But the good news is that if you don't want to receive marketing calls from a company that you do have a relationship with, and you want the calls to end, you can tell them "Please put me on your do-not-call list" and by law, they need to stop calling you, or risk heavy fines.
So what happens if they break the rules and still contact you once you're officially on the list (31 days after signing up)? Make a note of the date of the call and the name or number of the company, and each violation can fetch fines of up to $1,500 for a person and $15,000 for a corporation....that'll shut'em up! Haha
Hope this helps! Here's hoping that the next time you get an unexpected phone call, it's us at SUN FM saying you won our Grand Prize to Mexico with Click the Coconut!

David Blaine's stunt gone wrong with secret video
Let's be completely honest here...one of the big reasons why people tune into David Blaine specials is not to see what he does, but to see if something goes wrong. And last night, boy did things ever go wrong (no, not that...he's still alive).
Now, I've always loved magic. As a little boy, I used to have magic how-to books, perform tricks for my friends and family, and I used to love watching the magic TV specials. So naturally last night I tuned in to see David Blaine's TV special "Dive of Death", which was supposed to be his triumphant end to his "hanging upside-down for 60 hours" stunt (the one I emulated for 30 minutes on my show the other day).
For 2 hours, they kept promoting David's "Dive of Death"... something that had 'never been done before' and 'never likely to be done again'. The idea was that he would plummet 44 feet from above...and well...here's what happened (fast forward to the 2 minute mark and listen to the crowd's upset reaction after waiting for hours to see...well...nothing):
WHAT?! THAT WAS IT?!! Clearly something didn't go right here...and even worse, the announcer tried to still sell it as this "AMAZING" thing, even though what we saw was everything but.
Thanks to the Youtube generation, with everyone having cell phone cameras in the audience, check out what it was like to be in that crowd during the stunt(fast forward to the 2 minute mark, and listen to the New Yorkers give it to him...it's quite funny)
So what happened? According to David Blaine himself..his grand finale of diving from a platform 13 metres to the ground while attached to a harness didn't go according to plan. He was supposed to jump and, at three metres, be swept away by a bunch of helium-filled balloons. But because George Bush's presidental speech went long, they delayed his jump by 15 minutes and by then, the winds had caused the balloons to move, and caused this epic fail.
Let's hope that David Copperfield brings better tricks when he comes to town October 22nd at Prospera Place.
Ergh...I want those 2 hours of my life last night to magically be brought back.

Glad that now it's safe for us to talk about this very common occurance here in the Okanagan, seeing that for now, the revolving door of visitors is no longer...till next summer. LOL
Here are a couple quick comments I received from SUN FM listeners:
"So TRUE, brilliant work... everyone likes to be in the Okanagan, but no one likes to be in the Okanagan you know what I mean???"

"Awesome song Kevin and one all too familiar to anyone who has lived here 2 years or longer. All it takes is one relative to make the trip, then the word gets out!"- Kim
"That was an awesome tribute to summer visitors! This is true story that actually happened to me and my family. Last summer my mom, brother and I were walking along the boardwalk in City Park when we bumped into the mother of a friend of ours (her son sang at my wedding and we have known this family for 15 years). She was sitting with a friend of hers from Calgary who happened to be visiting for a couple of weeks. Turns out when this friend went back to Calgary, she called us up and invited herself AND her son to stay with us when she returned to Kelowna! Kevin, we had never met this woman before that day in City Park! Further, she wanted us to drive her around to look at houses for sale because she wanted to move to Kelowna! Kevin... I gotta tell you, I ain't that nice."- Nicole

Rihanna/Carrie: Yeah yeah yeah
Mariah Carey: And you will know that you're good if you trust in the good
Ashanti: Everything will be alright, yeah
Light up the dark, if you follow your heart
Mary: And it will get better
Mariah: Through whatever
Ensemble: CHORUS
If the mind keeps thinking you've had enough
But the heart keeps telling you don't give up
Who are we to be questioning, wondering what is what
Don't give up
THROUGH IT ALL, JUST STAND UP!
Ensemble: CHORUS
If the mind keeps thinking you've had enough
But the heart keeps telling you don't give up
Who are we to be questioning, wondering what is what
Don't give up
THROUGH IT ALL, JUST STAND UP!

You got in now, find it within now
You got in you, find it within
You got in now, find it within now
You got in you, find it within
Find it within you, find it within
Everyone: THROUGH IT ALL, JUST STAND UP!

The WORST Song Ever is...
As heard on the show today, a massive survey was done by AOL Radio and Spinner.com, and they've released the list of the worst songs ever made. Drumroll please....
Here's their Top 10:
1. Who Let The Dogs Out - Baha Men
2. Ice, Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice
3. She Bangs - Ricky Martin
4. Barbie Girl - Aqua
5. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
6. I Am Woman - Helen Redey
7. I'm Too Sexy - Right Said Fred
8. Ebony And Ivory - Paul MCCartney And Stevie Wonder
9. MACarena - Los Del Rio
10. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion.
What? No Mambo #5? No Achy Breaky Heart? Milkshake?
Now it's not to say that these songs don't have their place (in fact, I kinda like a couple of those songs). All these songs were successful, but just as quickly as their rise to fame, they became novelty songs and the public turned on them. Sure there's a bit of nostalgia in hearing these songs, but it's kinda like gum...generally the fun lasts for about 30 seconds and then you're ready to spit it back out. haha
So I took your votes for what you think should've made the list during the 3 o'clock Hot Topic, and suggestions included:
-YMCA by the Village People
-The Hamster Dance
-Rico Suave by Gerardo
-The Popcorn Song by Hot Butter
-Karma Chameleon by Culture Club
-The Thong Song by Sisqo
-Don't Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin
-Da da da by Trio
-We Built this City (on rock and roll) by Starship
-Anything by Milli Vanilli (haha)
Oh! And this gem got a few votes too:
*shudder*
Thanks for listening! Talk to you soon! :-)

SUN FM Listener on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno TONIGHT!
Hey-o!!
As mentioned on the show a couple days ago, one of our loyal SUN FM listeners, Drew Sherwood, is a guest today on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno! HOW COOL!! If you close your eyes, you may recognize his voice as he's a regular caller in the afternoon and with the 3 o'clock Hot Topic!
Drew's one of the stars of a documentary/reality TV show called "Ice Road Truckers" which is in it's second season, although it's not shown in Canada (even though it stars Canadians and filmed in Canada...go figure). You can stream the whole first season online at: http://www.history.com/minisites/iceroadtruckers
I checked out the show online and it's very fascinating! It follows the lives of 6 men who travel frozen lakes ("ice roads") 2 months of the year to transport vital supplies to diamond mines. They cover the hardships of mechanical failures, dangerous conditions, struggles to stay awake, and they also keep tabs on how much money each driver makes along his 2 month progress (it's not a competition, but it's fun to watch who's in the lead!). I'd recommend you to watch a couple minutes of it...it's quite insightful!
Be sure to tune-in at 11:35pm tonight as he represents K-town and the Okanagan! This way, we can all live vicariously through him! haha He'll also be calling me up tomorrow afternoon with the full run-down of what it was like to meet Jay Leno, and to share the stage with Kelsey Grammar and Gavin Degraw!
I'm off to broadcast live from Prospera Place today for the kick-off to the BC Summer Games! Drop by and say hello!
As always, thanks for listening!! :-)

My 3rd Anniversary at SUN FM- Thank You!! :-)
Hey-o!!
Horray!! Well today's my official 3rd anniversary since I joined SUN FM back in the summer of ‘05. I was a part of the "new SUN FM" re-launch line-up, and boy, what an incredible ride it's been!
Every year I always take this opportunity to reflect on how incredibly lucky I am to have listeners like you reading this. It's a privilege to talk to you everyday on the radio, and I really value the relationship that you and I have.
You truly are the best part of my job. This isn't some cheap ploy to suck up and get ratings, but it's me speaking from the heart. Sure, there's cool job perks like going to concerts and cool events, but at the end of the day, you make it fun for me to go to "work" (a term I use loosely...because if you're doing something you love, it never feels like "work"). Whether you're an active loyal listener, who calls in or e-mails me during the show, or you're someone who sits back and enjoys our afternoons together, I appreciate it. I can't thank you enough for your support & loyalty over these 3 incredible years, and you've helped my show hit #1 and stay there...I want you to know it's something I never take for granted.
Outside of the on-air studio, there's been so many great things that have happened to me this past year, like being asked to host the BC Summer Games Closing Ceremonies this weekend, being the honorary chair for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake, and being nominated for a broadcasting award for "Performer of Tomorrow" (for which I was a close second place, right behind a TV guy)...what a memorable year!
I put a lot of work, and a lot of heart into my show, and I thank you for making it all worth it by tuning in. I'm always working on new ideas, and I'm really excited about some of the things I've got in store for you soon! :-)

PS: Just for fun, here are my Top 3 favorite memories of the past 12 months:
1) The Infamous Phone Tap:
...yes this is the one that people still come up to me and talk about, where our listener had to hit on his friend's mom, and when he asked what she was doing, she stunned us all when she admitted she was doing something *very* private. Of course she didn't know she was on the radio, until the buzzer rang and her reaction was priceless! Haha it still makes me laugh (and a bit red in the race for her! lol)
2) The Great Christmas Tree Debate:
...this past Christmas marked our first Christmas tree for Katie and I, and we were on opposite ends of the spectrum. She wanted a real tree...I said a fake one was better because that's what I grew up with. I said you could vote on it, and I'll always remember this day as the day that you turned on me by siding with my wife (although only by a slight margin!) lol
3) "Summer Traffic's Back" Parody Song:
...it's almost a shame that the new bridge has been for the most part doing it's job because it meant I had to retire the song, but it was really fun while it lasted! So far no record deals to tell you of...haha
"HEDLEY HUNT" Winner!
UPDATE: Congratulations to Christian Sullivan, today's BIG WINNER of our FINAL pair of tickets to the SOLD-OUT Hedley Show! Christian was the first SUN FM listener to arrive at our secret SUN FM location with all 4 correct items in the HUNT!
Here were the clues to the items:
Item 1) If you're planning on taking a "Trip" to Kelowna, you'll need one of THESE to find your way around town!
...Answer: A map of Kelowna
Item 2) If you want a cool summer in the Okanagan, you best be "Gunnin'" for one of THESE super soakers!
...Answer: A water gun
Item 3) -You'll need this in the morning so you're "Never too Late" for work!
...Answer: An Alarm Clock
Item 4) You'll use THIS "For the Nights", so you don't bump your head in the darkness. (Hint: it plugs into the wall)
...Answer: A Nightlight
Way to go, Christian, and congratulations to all of our SUN FM listeners who won tickets this week! Have a blast at the concert! Don't forget, Hedley will be joining us in studio at 3:45pm Wednesday July 16th, so if you have any questions you'd like me to ask them, e-mail me!
Thanks for listening!

How NOT to get a date...
This guy's voice mails have been making their way around the world via Youtube because they're a perfect example of how NOT to get a date.
So here's the set-up...this woman in San Francisco meets this guy from Toronto on the street. They talk for 2 minutes, and he asks for her number. She gives it to him, and he leaves these gems...which not only run for 4:30mins (!), but he digs himself into a bigger hole the more he talks. Sooo...taken aback by his arrogance, she posts them on YouTube for all to hear. haha
First of all, let's recap the rules for calling someone you're trying to date:
1) Keep it short.
2) Be positive
3) Be coherent
4) Leave on a high note.
...yeah, this guy breaks all the rules.
Can you believe this guy is SINGLE? haha
**UPDATE: It turns out this guy is a disgraced doctor who now calls himself "Dimitri the Lover" and is selling a "seduction manual" to show Toronto men how to pick up women....REALLY!?
As always, thanks so much for listening and the e-mails!

Kelowna Youtube Video goes Hollywood!
Hey-o!!
Ok, this is one of those "it's soooo bad...it's good" videos. So far, this Kelowna-based couple has had almost 1 million views on youtube for their "Who needs a movie?" promotion video for their small production company. CTV recently ran a story on this, and described their video as "Think of every bad late night infomercial you've ever seen, with animation from the dark ages, and you only have the half of it. " haha it sounds really mean, but you'll agree, it's pretty accurate. Also, the couple even admits they know it's not that great.
Check out the video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AC0sR5_NTFo
Here's the crazy thing...they've just been contacted by the Jimmy Kimmel show, who've offered them $1000 a week to produce videos for the show, and there's talk of a new TV pilot too!
...now I wonder if my youtube video that Bri Cook and I made of my dance lessons for the Ellen Degeneres show will land us in Hollywood soon! lol
Take care, and thanks for listening!

Coldplay Plagarism Controversy
Hey-o!
So here's the latest controversy revolving around Coldplay's new song featured in the new Ipod commercial...
The band "Creaky Boards" claims that Coldplay plagiarized one of the group's songs. The lead singer says that Chris Martin saw his band perform last summer and used a melody from one of their songs for "Viva La Vida," the title track from the new Coldplay record.
Check out this video comparing the 2 songs...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUhFLiw6h6s&
Personally I think it's a stretch and don't hear what all the fuss is about, but what I find funny is the fact that the name of the Creak Board song is "The Songs I didn't Write" lol
Cheers!

My unexpected visit to Kelowna General Hospital...
A lot of you have been wondering about my whereabouts for the past week, so I thought I'd write a quick note.
I've been battling a pretty bad blood infection and was in the hospital for 3 days...the first time since I was in grade 3. It totally seemed to come out of the blue too. Last Thursday, I was researching and getting ready for my show as I normally do...when suddenly I started shaking uncontrollably and felt the coldest I've ever felt in my life (and I've lived in Fort McMurray, Alberta where it's -38). It was like...BAM!
So I booked it to the doctor who told me to get to emergency, and thankfully I was able to get the proper care because it turns out if untreated, it could've spelled some really bad things. So a special thank you to my pal Craig from SUN FM who drove me to the hospital. Interestingly, it wasn't until after 4 days and a gamut of tests (4 blood tests, a CT scan, CS, and X-ray), they discovered it was from a tear in my gastro-intestinal tract that caused this blood infection.
Perhaps it's just me and my sense of humor about things, but there were some funny moments in the hospital. Like when I got recognized....while I was getting a "CAT" scan...and naked. As flattering as it was to hear "Hey...wait...are you Kevin Lim!? I love your show!", I never pictured I would hear it while I had no clothes on. I remember telling myself, "I'm sure I'm going to laugh about this later".
Oh and then there's the adventure that was...getting my first (and hopefully last) colonoscopy. I think I'll save this one for my show...maybe I need another day or so to be able to laugh at the idea of someone sticking a camera up your you-know-what.
I have to say, the care from the doctors, nurses, and staff at KGH was phenomenal. I was a pretty sick kid growing up, and always saw the hospital as a place of caring- this experience reaffirmed my belief. What was not as enjoyable, however, was the wait to get a hospital bed. I checked in around 12:15pm to emergency, and I didn't get a bed till around 11pm. It's not the staff's fault, it's just the way it is, and why funding for things like our Have a Heart Radiothon is so crucial so we can help the hospital get what it needs.
It's weird, in our everyday lives, we're surrounded by the internet, TV, radio, and cell phones, that when you're left in emergency waiting for a bed to open up for hours with nothing to distract you, time goes by very very slowly. Thank goodness for the other patients who I could at least strike up a conversation with to pass the time by...although it always came out sounding like I was in jail..."so...what are you in for?"
Anyway, thanks for all the well-wishes and facebook messages...I really appreciate it. My progress has been wonderful over the past week and I'm feeling a world better. While my medication says not to operate heavy machinery, it says nothing about not doing a radio show, so I'm coming back on-air tomorrow (Thursday June 12th)! :-)
Take care, and remember, don't take life for granted. Tell the people that you care about that you love them everyday.

*Behind the Scenes at the Ellen Degeneres show!*
Hey-o!!
Just got back from 9 days in California, and had an amazing time!
I've had a lot of e-mails asking how my "Ellen Experience" went, so here's a look at what it was like!
It was Thursday May 15th, and Ellen was taping 2 shows that day. The Monday show with Janet Jackson was taped right before ours, and our show (the one with Justin Timberlake [WOO HOO!] and Duffy) showed Friday May 16th! Everyone in the show before us won tickets to see Janet Jackson on tour, and so we were all curious to find out if Ellen had any gifts for our audience (and boy did she ever!! More on that later).
So we arrive there at our check-in time of 3:30pm for the 6pm taping, and the 8 of us (my family and Katie's family) are corralled at the NBC Studios gate. We waited probably for about 30 mins while they checked everyone in, and during that time they had us all fill out a simple survey, asking questions like ("What was the last good deed you did for a stranger" and "Do you have any unusual talents?"). Apparently it's to give the producers some ideas for what they can use on the show if they have the time.
We then are ushered to a security line-up, then into the backlot area of the studio where Ellen tapes, and we wait some more (probably a good 90 mins while they showed re-run of Ellen on the flat-screen TVs). Thankfully it was shaded and we had seats because it was HOT that day (38 degrees). One of the things that was interesting is that they pull certain people from the crowd to do a interview with the producers (which they use to decide who might be good for games and are also placed right by Ellen's dance path). Sadly I wasn't one of them, but just as well...I couldn't compare to some of these SUPERFANS that were chosen.
Finally 6pm rolls around and we're brought into the wonderfully air-conditioned studios where there's a crowd warmer who leads the crowd into what to expect, and they play some music while we dance (50 cent, Janet Jackson, James Brown). What's interesting is watching them move certain people around by trading seats so that they get a certain "look" on-camera from the people in the audience. Generally, if you're a good-looking, well-dressed female, you'll get an isle seat. Lucky for my wife, she was given one of these seats right by where Ellen dances! So she ended up making it on the show without any dance lessons from Bri! haha
After about 15 mins of warm ups, the show begins and Ellen comes out to a roar of an applause! You'd think that after 2.5 hours waiting outside, we'd all be exhausted, but everyone in the audience was in great spirits! Ellen did her monologue, which included pics of her 50 ½ birthday party, and then she danced! She was about 7 feet away from me, which was so cool!!
This was an incredible show to be a part of, as we were in the audience where she announced she's getting married (!), and the one and only JT was on the show! The show tapes in real time, so what we saw was what made it on TV (aside from a couple short edits for time). During commercials, they got everyone dancing again, while Ellen was surrounded by make up people touching her up, and producers running over what's coming up in the next segment.
Honestly I can't believe how quickly the show flew by! Next thing we knew, Duffy was performing "Mercy", and then Ellen told us about her surprise gift she brought for us...everyone in the audience got the new Dance Dance Revolution video game AND an XBOX 360!!! We went CRAZY when they brought them all out! Figuring out how to bring them all back in our luggage was a bit of an interesting task, but it was totally worth it! BTW the funniest sight was an 80 year old woman after the show with a couple XBOXs stacked up in her walker standing on the sidewalk! I wish I had a camera to show you! All I could picture her thinking was "what's an XBOX?" haha
After the show, Ellen taped her promo of what's coming up on the show, and then she addressed the audience and thanked us all for coming. She seems like such an incredible person, and it sounded like she was speaking from the heart when she said how much it means to her that people come from all over the world just to see her. I feel the same way when I think of all of you, who make an effort to tune your radio to 99.9 SUN FM and join me for my show every afternoon.
They unfortunately don't have time to do autographs with Ellen, or allow you to bring cameras, but it was such an amazing experience. Plus, afterward, JT gave me the nod and a wave as he was leaving the lot! Lol! So despite the long wait, the day flew by, and it was all worth it! I'd totally recommend you to keep an eye on her website (www.ellentv.com) for tickets if you're ever planning a trip to L.A!
Aside from Ellen, we spent a day at Universal Studios- where we were one of the first to preview the new Simpsons Ride (which sadly didn't live up to all the hype)- a day on Hollywood Blvd, and 5 awesome days in my favorite place in the world, DISNEYLAND! This was my 5th visit to DL, and it's always magical.
My top 5 fav Disneyland rides:
1) Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters (it's an interactive ride where you try to rack up points with your laser gun...I totally got addicted to it, especially after finding out there are hidden targets for bonus points!)
2) Splash Mountain (there's a funny photo of us as we're coming down the big drop, and my wife is dumping a bottle of water on my head lol)
3) Tower of Terror (AMAZING special effects and such a fun ride!)
4) California Screamin' (I love roller coasters)
5) Grizzly River Run (perfect for the 38 degree weather we had in Anaheim)
*Honorable Mention: The Indiana Jones Ride! It rocks!!
So there you go, in a nutshell that's what I've been up to while Sonia's been filling in! It's been weird not being able to check my e-mail for like 10 days and so I've got a lot of catching up to do, but thank you for your messages, and thanks as always for listening!
Take care!!!

What happens to your plastic grocery bags....(video)
Hey-o!
Ok today on the show we were talking about the proposed plastic bag ban in Vancouver (and possibly one day here in the Okanagan if it catches on), which I believe is a fantastic idea...especially after watching this video.
I got the link from a friend in Vancouver, and it will shock you what actually happens when we throw out these plastic grocery bags.
The video features 'The Great Pacific Garbage Patch'- it's 3.5 million tonnes of garbage floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and it's twice the size of Texas.
Experts say at this point we can't clean up the mess, but we can prevent it from getting worse. The video was done by the Agalita Marine Research Foundation.
FREE Skiing/boarding + Dinner with moi :-)
Hey-o!!
I'm SOOOOOO counting down till Friday November 30th because Big White and Silverstar officially opens for the ski & board season, and we're taking our shows live all day up to Big White! We did this last year and it was AMAZING!! (well...I did bruise my tailbone HARD during my first snowboarding lesson, but it's alright haha) Soooo this year...wanna join me?
We're doing this cool contest where you get to bring 3 of your friends/family for a free day of skiing/snow boarding on us (including rentals and lift passes!), and we'll also have dinner together at Snowshoe Sam's! I'd love to meet you and...it's going to be an amazing time! It's so beautiful* up at Big White!
(*note: to refresh your memory from Monday Nov 19th's Hot Topic...scenery, women and babies are "beautiful"...on the other hand...men shouldn't be referred to as "beautiful" lol)
Link to "The Mom Song"!
Hey-o!!
As heard on the show (Oct 3), here's a link to "The Mom Song"! This comedienne has taken everything a mom would say in a 24 hour period and put it into one song! I lost count as to how many my mom's said to me! haha
Enjoy!
Summer holidays are coming to an end....
So here we are...post-summer holidays! The excess bridge traffic is gone, gyro beach has cleared out, and now...bring on fall! It's weird...I usually prefer to jump from summer to my other favorite season (winter), but for some reason I'm really excited about fall this year. Perhaps it's the crispness in the air, more r&r time (no more revolving door of visitors at home), and the cozier evenings to spend with your loved ones. That, and I'm really excited that my wife has agreed to help make me a kickin' Ghostbusters costume for Halloween this year! She's going to be Penny from "Hairspray", so we won't exactly match...but oh well! I'll have a proton pack! hahaha
